There was a lot more to the Yandy situation and trade than folks remember. The same with Mejia.
When Yandy first came up, he had never played 1B. He had done some work in the outfield, but had not taken to it. He was strictly a 3B/DH and we had two very good ones.
The next season, Santana left and we brought in Alonso, but Yandy had still never played a game at first. We still had JRam and Edwin, and needed a 1B, so we brought in Alonso...who certainly wasn't a bust. (23 HR, 84 RBI)
The next season, we needed a 1B, but Yandy had STILL never played a game there. The org loved Carlos and Carlos loved the org, but he made too much money. The org also wanted to get out from under Edwins contract, after having his worst season in seven years. A three way deal was reached in which we accomplished both goals...PLUS received a top 100 prospect that played 1B...PLUS $4 mil to help pay Santanas contract.
Carlos had a career year, was an All Star, won a SS, and got MVP votes. In the Covid season he fell off dramatically, and was gone to KC.
Bauers showed up with a bad attitude (a very rare miss for this org) and was the ultimate bust.
Yandy was meh in Tampa for three years...averaging 1.3 fWAR. Last year, four years after the trade, he finally had a solid season.
The fact that Bauers busted seems to be the sole focus of the revisionist history, along with the fantasy that Yandy was an immediate impact player.
But the real impact player in the trade was Santana, when we were trying to get to the playoffs. It was the fourth consecutive 90+ win season for the Tribe.
In the end it was a very good trade for Cleveland.
Yandy ( and Mejia) did not fit the culture here. Contrast there unenthusiasm and/or inability to switch to positions of need to players weve had for ten years up to the present. From veterans like Carlos and Kipnis...and Jose...to kids like Arias.
