Fallout 4

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I have not really modded yet, only some basic ini tweaks to make the game functional and remove some bugs. Once that was done a few days after I installed there were no more crashes or stuck characters. The framerates haven't really been an issue. With one of the early on BoS quests I had to turn off clipping to get through a wall to activate a button and complete a quest that had otherwise broken. There were a handful of other less game breaking bugs. All in all these were relatively minor nuisances to be able to actually play the game, but a AAA game should not launch like that, even if we expected it to given their reputation.

I like to play through the first time without making any material mods to the content of the game, unless it's completely broken. In the future I might try another heavily modded playthrough with some different choices. More interesting weapons/armor, less (almost zero) scavenging, more varied/interesting creatures and some new areas please and thank you. :thumbup1:

Just thinking on it, how much time have I spent searching shelves, desks, crates, drawers for useful shit, and then storing extra shit on my companion, and then being encumbered and having to determine which of this shit I should drop so I can fast travel to my settlement, because god knows I'm not going to bother coming back for said shit...that's a not insignificant portion of my playtime. And it's shitty.

I really would rather not have been bothered with building a base, either. One base is bad enough, but to keep sending me out to secure other shitty settlements by saving some helpless assholes that I'll otherwise never visit? AND THEN they have the nerve to warn me that these settlements I don't give two shits about are being attacked? I'm in the middle of doing some super important stage of the main quest and up pops "Oberland Station is under attack!" Fuck em. That's what I say. The bums lost.

Agree 100%, fucking hate base building. But I do like seeing the shit people can put together! My wife actually does all that shit for me.. :chuckle:

I'll add that to the list of reasons to get married. :chuckle:

This might be one of the funnier Fallout Easter eggs (think some one was a Nuggets Fan - It's from FO:NV btw))

I've been wanting to play this game, but I'm skeptical of it because of what I've heard of its RPG aspects being dumbed down. What's your guys' take on it?

Perhaps there is/will be mods that ramp up the RPG aspect of it. I only have a limited amount of time to play games, and I enjoy RPGs the most, so this is an important part of a game for me. Otherwise, I'll just keep on playing Skyrim and/or look into Witcher 3, FFXV, FFVII Remake, and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Game isn't dumbed down. It's streamlined. It is what Skyrim is to Oblivion.

Folks saying it's somehow different, in an RPG sense, than Fallout 3, likely don't remember Fallout 3. The games are very similar.

How do you mean?

Fallout is somewhat like Skyrim. If you like Skyrim, you'd maybe like Fallout. It's nothing like The Witcher, and even further from Final Fantasy.

I think it's important to note though that Fallout is still an RPG, it's just not the same kind of RPG. People are starting to forget that American/British-RPG's never really had compelling narrative stories or strong protagonists by design.

You role play in these games by actually role playing a character that you imagine. It's not done for you as it is in say Final Fantasy or The Witcher.

Fallout 4 does move somewhat away from this in some respects (being widowed by default, for example), but for the most part, you're free to be anyone you want to be.

This is all hearsay, but a lot of the customization of stats, the usefulness of certain stats (luck, speechcraft, etc.), amount of armor pieces, etc., are all what I'm talking about for mods being able to add those back in (if they're missing; like I said, it's hearsay). When I say mods, I mean 3rd-party, Mod Organizer-installed type stuff. I didn't build a near $3k tower to NOT mod my games in 4k definition. :chuckle:

Who the hell am I kidding anyway? I'm going to play the piss out of all of these.

Yeah, I don't know if we'll see any mod to add the skill system back into Fallout; and although the perk tree is different, it does a good job of replacing the older system.

Luck still works the same, it's just as overpowered as it was in New Vegas.

Speechcraft is identical to how it worked in Fallout 3. People conflate Fallout 3 and New Vegas, not realizing these two systems are completely different with different intended outcomes.

Bethesda feels as though the concept of a sure-fire change at any dice roll is outside of the spirit of AD&D which is what these games are built on. Frankly, I tend to agree. I just think their skill checks are too fucking hard.

There's already a great armor mod on the Nexus, and I'd strongly recommend you pick it up before playing much.

The game is very much like Fallout 3, the only real difference is that it's a bit harder, less random, and weapons and armor have been completely changed into this procedurally generated stuff (I don't like). Lastly, of course, instead of having skills you have perks.

The game is very much like Fallout 3, but not really like New Vegas.

@gourimoko

Been too busy to play this but I'm gonna jump in later tonight. Any must have mods out yet that you recommend?

Man, there's actually quite a few.

You should start out with the expanded settlement mod. It adds pretty much every door, wall, floor, etc, into the game. To me, this makes settlement building a lot more fun. You should also add the mailbag mod, which lets you carry another 50 lbs, and also the ammo mod that lets you get New Vegas style ammunition.

You might want to consider the dialogue mod, it's personal preference though - I personally have this turned off since I like the Mass Effect style dialogue tree but others hate it.

The Full Armor Slot mod is brilliant as it removes the artificial limitations on some armors not allowing you to do things like change your left leg piece or wear something on top of your pants.. Makes no sense, very good mod to fix that.

I've modified the power armor so that the fuel consumption is much lower (about 1/10th). I saw no point in continually collecting fuel cells, it makes very little sense either scientifically or within the game. It's essentially just busy work.

In the same spirit, eventually, you should install the junk batch file mod that will give you tons of the misc items you'll need instantly. This way you can focus on the game and not being a scavenger. I tried to avoid this mod, but I don't play scavenger playthroughs; I normally buy whatever I need from merchants and just dump what I tend to find. By midgame I don't want to be rummaging around for parts. This mod fixes that completely.

There's the realistic weather mod, better lighting mod, and darker nights mods. I'd recommend all of those too.

There's also quite a few graphics and texture mods, and almost all of them have been very welcomed. They've improved my FPS, improved the look at feel of the game. The realtime shadow mod was a huge improvement, as well as the texture replacements. There's also some ENBs out now too that do a pretty good job at fixing anti-aliasing and SSAO effects.

Fallout 4 is getting a lot of Skyrim and even some Witcher mods applied to it. So it's just getting better and better and the GECK isn't even out yet.

I'm on my phone but wanted to add Gophers YouTube channel link after Gour's above post.

Gopher is a modder that has coded his own mods and helps others with theirs (he did the unified hud for NV which is an essential mod for me)

He also makes mod tutorial videos to show you how to install and get the mods working together.

He'll explain concepts like load order and how to edit files that may need edited. He explains these step by step. Both are imperative to know so you don't break your game (load order got me a few times when I first started)

He also highlights the best new mods from the community every week or so since he's really active in the modding community.

FYI (In case you don't click that link) The price of the season pass is going up from $30 to $50 on March 1st, so buy it now if you care.

Love the new DLC's concepts.. Where is the GECK though? The mods so far have been great!
