Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Does anyone listen to audiobooks? I drive 50 minutes to and from work everyday so those would be nice to listen to. I really want to start reading A Game of Thrones but I just don’t have time.

I've recently started commuting to work and have been listening to the Game of Thrones audiobooks even though I've read the books several times. They are really good, although strangely the fourth book has a different reader than the rest of them do and a few of the pronunciations are way off to the point that they are jarring at first (neither of the two readers are anywhere close with Brienne's name, for example).

Is this a mummer's farce?

Yeah I noticed he pronounces Petyr’s name totally different.

Like Randolph, I read a lot of classics because I happen to teach them.

Now with a free summer I get into a little more recreational reading, so I finally have time to get to something I've wanted for awhile. I recommend The Beastie Boys Book by (primarily) Adam Horowitz and Mike Diamond. It's a great read of all things Beasties, anecdotes, and most importantly their ties to NYC. From the origins of "Cookie Puss" to why Hello Nasty is their best album (disagree), it's perfect for a fan like me. I like to think I knew everything about my favorite rap group, but this was a treat. Highly Recommended (if even for the cookbook portion).

I'm reading a bio on President Garfield.

I think we've all been to the monument, but I must admit I know little about him.

So far so good. The insights about the lead-up to the Civil War are very interesting. People didn't actually believe it would come to war until it happened. Ohio in particular was in shock and had zero preparation for a conflict. The initial Ohio Regiments were half-armed with pikes because the state government hadn't bought muskets in 20 years...

Started The Expanse series. Really enjoying the first book. Reading again has helped me relax and de-stress and it’s been nice getting wrapped up in a good story for the first time in a long time.

Shameless plug for audiobooks and info-based podcasts.

Never Split the Difference. Audiobook. Hostage negotiator talks about negotiations. Loved the bits about the hostage negotiations. Like almost anyone can and will benefit from this book, from a practical standpoint.

Rn listening to Crucial Conversations. It’s good but I haven't really fallen into it.

Podcast Series: Zero to IPO. Mostly tech CEOs talk about growing businesses, successes & failures. Sad to see it end but they are doing a new season so...

Podcast Series: My Favorite Murder. I think it was you, Stannis, in that other thread about true crime. It’s 2 narrators that pick a murder or serial killer and get lots of historical details on the case(s). The episodes can be hit or miss but holy shit some are incredible. This falls under more like hobby listening, but it did carry me home on a road trip quite nicely. @The Oi you prob have heard it but if not, check it out.

I got turned on to the Expanse by my son, and was hooked immediately.. reading the last book released now..

What I like is the vision of the future in space which brings a better perspective on human diversity, and the history of politics.. I think it's closer to real than most..

Just wait, man. It gets fucking wild in the later books.

In a good way.

I was so happy when Amazon saved the show precisely because I really want to see that crazy shit unfold on screen.

Got me pumped. Awesome.

Bumping this because I just finished Joe Abercrombie's latest novel, which is the first in a new trilogy set in his First Law world. It's called A Little Hatred and it was really good, although it felt a little on the short side. Maybe I'm just too used to reading Martin's stuff, but I seem to remember the First Law trilogy books being longer. Oh well. Still really good. I think it takes place some thirty years after the original trilogy and follows a lot of characters who are children of the key characters in the original trilogy.

I highly recommend it if you're a fantasy fan, although you should 100% read the other First Law books first. I think there are six of them, a trilogy and then three stand-alone titles that expand upon the world and continue the stories of many key characters from that trilogy.

Got me pumped. Awesome.

And now season four is out and was great. Can't wait for season five. You checked out the fourth yet?

Havent tried the show. Rather read the books first but I’m just having a hard time finding much reading time lately. A tv show might be a more realistic consumption medium for this story.

I can't choose one favourite book! That would be series, and three of them. The Witcher series, The Cemetery of Forgotten Books and Winternight trilogy
