Formula 1

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Entertaining race, but I hope they never go back. DRS needs a tweak too- it's way too powerful right now.

This is an interesting analysis I found online breaking down Hamilton vs Russell's qualifying laps. Top graph is distance vs speed, then throttle, brake, gear. Lewis' line is purple, George's line is green. Higher is better on the distance vs speed chart- we'll start there.

Looks like Lewis had a big moment in between a pretty high speed Turn 6, Turn 7 where he had to lift out of the throttle. He overslowed the car in most of the heavy braking zones relative to George as well. You want to avoid the "checkmark" shapes in the braking zones of the distance vs speed chart and look for a "rounded" valley.

I don't think the throttle chart is wholly accurate, but George looks to be more confident putting the power down which is key at a track with so many long straights. Notice how the green line goes upwards much more abruptly, Lewis' is more rounded off before going to full throttle. I have hard time believing these shapes are 100% accurate though.

This brake chart is only useful in the sense that it shows Lewis got on the brakes a bit earlier than George in a few spots. It gives us no real insight into pedal pressures and pedal release, so we're missing a lot of data there. Unsurprising that this isn't available.

It's only 1 lap, but this seems to match up well with the general lack of stability he's feeling. It's odd that Russell seems to be dealing with more confidently.

Ferrari is crazy fast right now.
I'm surprised, they've looked great. I unfairly have this image in my head of Ferrari being bumbling idiots sometimes living off of past success, but they've built a great car this year and Leclerc is so sharp. I feel bad for Sainz though. He's probably already set to just play a supporting role this year.

they have a reputation of doing this at ferrari, right? every new change, they are always leaders of the pack, then others catch and surpass them?

judging what i've seen from russell these last two races, i think merc will catch them sooner or later.

So I used to watch Formula 1 back 20 years ago. So needless to say I am out of the loop. Who are some of the big names/teams who are must see?

If you watched 20 years ago you'll probably remember Fernando Alonso's name. He's one of the sports current elder statesmen driving for Alpine (same Renault team he won his championships for, just operating under a new name). He's still extremely talented, but the Alpine is probably 4th best car on a good day.

Michael Schumacher's son Mick is in his second season, but hasn't flashed the generational talent of his father and he's in a midpack car. Jos Verstappen's son on the other hand ,Max, does have generational talent and won his first championship last year driving for Red Bull. Red Bull morphed out of the awful Jaguar team of the early 2000's and has become a dominant force alongside Mercedes and Ferrari.

Charles Leclerc driving for Ferrari looks to be the favorite for the championship this year. Verstappen in the Red Bull can get close, but the RB is having major reliability issues thus far.

Lewis Hamilton driving for Mercedes is probably the biggest name in the sport currently. He's matched Schumacher's 7 titles after going on a Schumacher-esque tear at Mercedes in the last few years.

Ferrari is cheat code right now

I think Ferrari is in trouble. I'm skeptical that they'll be able to develop their car at a pace quick enough to keep Max and Red Bull behind. I'm curious if Red Bull has their reliability issues sorted though. It's nice to see another competitive season so far!

what the hell is wrong with mclaren

Red Bull obviously putting the brakes on Checo. Hard to see anyone other than Red Bull competing for the drivers championship so why not let Max and Checo race?

It’s too bad Red Bull aren’t having the problems instead of Ferrari. Verstappen would be whining like the bitch that he is if his car kept failing like Leclerc’s.
