Has anybody been watching any F1 racing this year? It's one of the best seasons I can think of in my lifetime with Lewis Hamilton as the established champion and upstart Max Verstappen finally having a car capable of pushing for the championship. The NBA level of pettiness off track has been a fun bonus as well.

It’s been a great season. Due to a complete lack of American drivers the sport doesn’t get a lot of attention here (last Yank to win a race was Mario Andretti), plus it is very difficult to pass on some tracks.

I saw the Verstappen - Hamilton wreck live Sunday. Pretty bad when a tire runs over your helmet.

I highly recommend the movie Rush to anyone not familiar with F1.

I have to imagine Verstappen and Hamilton have at least one more incident this season. The championship is too close and Max is too stubborn for it not to happen. I have my popcorn ready.

Rush is one of the best dramatized racing movies out there. Daniel Bruhl did an amazing job as Lauda. On a related note, Netflix released a Michael Schumacher documentary today that looks promising.

It was great that Niki Lauda got some additional attention once the movie was released. He said that the movie was pretty accurate (there were a couple of Hollywood embellishments).

I think Rush is a great date night movie. I had someone on my staff (female) ask me for a recommendation when it came out and she took her husband. Her husband loved the cars & racing; she liked the hot Euro drivers.

Monza was two drivers going wheel-to-wheel, neither giving an inch, and knocking each other out. Still a bunch of races to go. Verstappen is changing engines and will be at the back of the grid in Russia, but Bottas started at the back and finished third (might have won but for the illegal move by Sainz).

Max rubs me the wrong way because he never yields and nothing is ever his fault. Then he turns around and raises a stink when somebody drives him the same way. He's incredibly quick, but races like he's still in karts.

There are a lot of Lewis Hamilton haters too. It’s making this season great, because two rivals that don’t like each other and whose fans hate the other driver just adds to the hype, and the season has lived up to the hype.

I used to barely notice when Formula 1 was on. Then I watched this:

This is what got me interested as well. I think it also helps that, for the most part, many of the drivers are super likeable.

I did find it funny, not much Mercedes in season 1. Coming in with no knowledge I was pulling for the people to win and thinking gosh they are almost there and just a matter of time before they win. Then you realize Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes exists and, at least for the last 3-5 years, everyone is just battling for second. You go from thinking how hard this is and all the things that can happen and people are maybe only winning one or two races a year, then you see Hamilton is either winning or on the podium 75% of the time. Granted this year has been slightly different.

Mercedes exited all motor racing after the horrific crash in 1955 at LeMans that killed 83 spectators. They didn’t return until 1987.

Netflix does a great job with Drive to Survive. It was the perfect format to introduce the sport to a new audience. I'm amazed at how many people are now watching the races live after catching the bug from the show.

The producers have to be thrilled with the level of drama this year in F1. They're not going to have to artificially pump up any storylines.

Dramatic race yesterday with the late rain. Young Star Lando Norris pushed back on his team and refused to come in for inter tires. He looked like he was driving on I-71 after plowing with no salt (happened to me once - brutal). Lost a near-certain 2nd and possible 1st. Meanwhile Verstappen started 20th, was running 7th when he came in for inter tires and took 2nd. Lewis might have won the race but lost the championship due to the rain.

I think I would have done in the same if I were in Lando's shoes. His time will come.
