Francona extended until 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Best thing they’ve done this year. He’s the only reason we’re going to be competitive.

3 more years, not sure how far behind Boudreau he is, but I'm guessing he likely retires in 2022 and ends up as the franchise leader in wins as a manager.

Another stunning stat: if he makes it through the 2022 season, he'll be the only manager in Indians history to manage the team for 10+ years.

Don't all the players love Tito?

Yes.

But when you’re trying to entice perhaps the biggest name in modern franchise history to stay, him watching a manager he is very very close with either retire or leave the year prior to his deal being up (and there was real Tito retiring heat) probably wouldn’t be the best thing.

This is great news for a few reasons.

Any idea if they are working towards extending Clevinger? He and Bieber seem like the next logical targets.

Usually this team target a players arbitration years then adds a year or two into free agency, so that would be next offseason for Clev (arbitration eligible in 2020), while for Bieber that would be the 2021 time frame (arbitration eligible in 2022). At least that is what it seems like from the Cleveland brass when they do extensions. So Clev is due for a contract extension during this season/next off season. Now it doesn't mean they will come to an agreement, but honestly I think the FO probably wants to get it done before he hits arbitration.

This is Clevinger's last year before he hits arbitration. Brantley, Kluber, Carrasco, and Ramirez were all extended before their final pre-arb season or a week into the season. I may be mistaken, but I think Kipnis was extended a year earlier in his service time than the rest of those guys.

Meaning, technically, they are "behind" in extending Clevinger, in regards to their past extensions. They likely lose leverage, from a team friendly extension perspective, should Clevinger reach arbitration. I imagine he would make $4-5m in arbitration.

I really didn't see any rumors for Clev and I know they like to get a deal done before arbitration, but maybe they want to see if he can repeat last season before they extend him or they are waiting for Bauer/Kluber (or someone else) to be off the books next off season. Maybe tag Bimbo (since I am not sure if he sees my tags or not), and see if he has any knowledge about this situation. I do though believe most of us would agree getting a couple extra years out of Clev, especially the way he has been, would be a smart idea.

I replied directly to him like 5 posts ago asking this. You're killing me, coach
