Free Agency Safari 2021 Edition

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's reality.

LeBron aside, who's our biggest free agent signing? Larry Hughes?

Our front office cannot rely on free agent signings to lead to a championship roster.
Well, what Im saying its not because its Cleveland. Its because we stuck with bad contracts for years and cant get rid of them.Thats poor decisions of the management and their inability to move these contracts when needed.

FA players want several things from their new teams. Money, Winning, Quality of Life which includes weather. Right now Cleveland offers none of these.

An example is likely Tony Snell who signed at Portland for less money (about 2.6 M) than Cleveland might have offered. Rumors had the Cavs offering half the MLE $4.5 M for a shooting SF. Vet FA are not going to sign with Cleveland unless there is a substantial over pay.

Nah, even when we've had cap space and the most desirable player on the planet we couldn't get quality free agents.

The second-class of the NBA cannot rely on free agency to build a competitive roster. Cleveland, Portland, Detroit, Utah, Minnesota, etc. There are a whole lot of teams that aren't on a level playing field with New York, California, Florida and Texas. It's okay to admit it. It allows you to base yourself in reality and make the best decisions you can.

Well when LBJ was here we had a nice team, were winning and still couldn’t get players to come to even play with him. No Bosh, D Wade, Michael Redd, Ray Allen, Carmelo or not even Metta Peace…..I’m cool with building through the draft and/or trade.
BTW no Josh Hart as he is re-signing with the Pels. Guess we’re rolling with what we have next season.

Except from 2-4 out of 30 teams none can offer good weather and quality of life, and still when you are athlete-millioner you can buy any house and create exception quality of life for youself and your family even in the middle of desert. So that item when can exclude easily.Winning.Thats one of the most important things, yes, but again except 5-6 teams how many can offer a chance to the trophy?Winning team is not something that coming out of nowhere,GM and owner should build.Money I mentioned in that previous post, saying our bad contracts is what stopping us from from being a better team and thats again on GM.

This is a narrow view on "quality of life."

Many people would be happier with a nice apartment in a nice, walkable area of New York than they would be in a multi-million dollar estate in the middle of nowhere.

It's fine to have your own personal preferences, but you shouldn't assume everyone else shares the same preferences.

Then again, how many teams except NY and California offerring that? Not even quarter of the league, but they still manage having either better players to lure or having better results.Take a look at Lequit era in Cleveland and compare it with his era in LA.Before him joining Lakers how many player like an idea going to LA,even though its infrastructure, weather, quality of life and etc?How that changed after he signed with them ,when almost everyone dreamed of joining James-Davis bandwagon. On the other hand, his years in Cle,it wasnt a line of guys waiting to join Bron here.So its not like a rule, when players need only money, cup and beaches with prostitutes around.Every case is different, and front office can make that difference,we just never head that good front office.

And look how long it took LA and NY to attract quality free agents. Before Lebron the Lakers hadn’t sign one major free agent since Kobe! The Knicks have a been a FA wasteland for 15 years…..same with Brooklyn.

Getting desperate, but what's Allen Crabbe up to? Signing him would bring his career full circle.

I think you need current players to recruit players to come here. Relationships with other players may get them willing to at least listen to the offer that the Cavs would be willing to give out. I think Sexton might be the only guy someone would even think about teaming up with right now, even that is questionable. Garland having only one good year under his belt isn't going to attract anyone to come play with him.

The other part of it is the front office probably needs to assess the market and not waste time on a player they don't have a shot at. That's something I don't think they seem to have a good grasp of. The relationship side of the business is something this front office doesn't seem to understand. NBA free agency seems to happen in tiers, a team like the Cavs needed to hit up the guys a couple tiers below that initial wave and give them an offer right off the bat. Try to work a guy over days or weeks before they hit on the radar of other teams.

There are definitely limitation to the Cavs just being in Cleveland and not a winning team. I'm not sure the front office realized those limitations and how they can address them in the future.

Really this is a team that should built through the draft and with trades. Having 9 future 2nd round picks stocked up probably isn't the best strategy if we want long term talent. They need to take more shots at players in the draft to try to even the playing field. I also think they need to reassess their trade strategy for accumulating assets. How are we only able to gain 2nd round picks while other rebuilds have been able to get 1st round picks.

What they really need is to win some games. Show the core is worthwhile and they can be a good team

I wouldn't underestimate the appeal of Garland. He has had some glowing reviews from other players including Draymond.

Color me shocked another Klutch repped player would have glowing reviews of Garland. Reminds me of the praise Cedi got from LeBron and Durant the one time Cedi got to work out with them.
