Future Roster - Trade Needs

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Well, he can't be this bad, right? He's hitting .162 with five singles and a double in 37 at-bats and 2 RBI's. One hit in his last 13 at-bats. He'll get some opportunities this weekend since three of the four Tiger starters are right-handed. I remember that Franmil Reyes sucked for a few weeks after coming over from San Diego, then he started hitting. Maybe Naylor just needs to get settled in. The door is definitely wide open for him here as opposed to San Diego. We need an outfielder who can hit and we will probably need a first baseman next year so Naylor is definitely in the right organization.
We need a first baseman this season. Carlos continues to be awful.

I'd give up a nice pitching prospect and another piece to get Willi Castro back. He would look good for us at 2B for the next couple of seasons. I hated it when they traded him, but he was absolutely blocked.
So would Tyler Freeman

The market in the iff season will be flooded with non tendered ball players.

Consider that arbitrators will be making decisions based upon pre pandemic salary structures...not on the present situation. Clubs know that a flooded and depressed market will offer up similar quality at prices well below present arby figures.

This won't affect a pitcher like Clevinger but it may impact guys like Naquin and Wittgren.

Though that means bringing back/bringing in veterans should be lower market friendly as well. So hopefully in return we can get the right veterans to mix in with the large numbers of young guys that we will be projected to have.

of course it will affect all teams not just the indians --- keep in mind also that revenue is way down for all teams so, imo, it will be to scale - the dodgers and yankees will still have more resource than cleveland

I agree with you -- certainly. Yanks, Dodgers, etc. still have more. The interesting part to me is how wide the disparity will be....not so sure it will be universally to scale throughout league. My own guess is that the "poor" group expands significantly (50%?), with other upper middle class types ratcheting down, too....below just proportion. The top 5 or so will be just fine in relative terms, though I would not be shocked to see 15-20 teams drastically cut payroll/curtail spending. We'll find out in the coming months.

Everything I read is his arm is screaming second base.
Maybe it does in time. Just becuz Tyler Freeman gets a shot at SS in 2021 (or 2022) does not mean he is locked there forever...

I seem to recall another young player got a chance at SS the season before Lindor debuted. That other player went back to the minors for a short time when Lindor debuted & then re-appeared playing multiple spots around the field before taking over at 3B...

BTW - that guy has multiple 3rd place finishes in AL MVP voting....

Naylor smacks the ball tonight so of course he makes a bad "slide" into 2nd and has to come out - so 2020 (otoh, mercado gets to come out and see what second base looks like)

I'm not too worried if he ends up at 2B or SS since we need someone at both spots long term anyways since its very unlikely we keep Lindor and Hernandez looks like a stopgap.

We have Chang, Clement, Miller also competing in the middle INF plus if we trade Lindor we should get some more talent back for him. I am not too worried if Freeman cannot play SS since we should have someone in that depth who will take over SS in due time.

Hmm...

Freeman's arm.. is not a howitzer.. it doesn't create frozen ropes that get across the diamond in the bat of an eye.. it's a good arm..it's an accurate arm.. what makes his defense at SS special is the ability to transfer the ball from his glove to his hand and on the way... effortlessly.. smoothly.. almost like it's all one step.. It's a sight to behold..

...at least the few times I watched..
