Game Thread 2019-20 Season Game #1 | Cleveland Cavaliers @ Orlando Magic | Oct 23rd, 2019

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think it's going to take a while for Beilein to know what each player does best and how to get the best out of each guy. He clearly has no understanding of how streaky Clarkson is. I also don't think he understands that Cedi and Sexton are players that play there best when they don't sit for long stretches.

I hope he can see that he needs to reign in Nance. I also don't think he ran enough action for Love. Delly didn't look like himself either.

Yeah I think there was a lot to be encouraged about, but the irregular minutes for everyone were clunky. He doesn't know a 48 min game.

Vets looked worse than anyone. Really terrible.

I mean they win this game if Love played well or Clarkson shot his Normal percentages. Vets lost this game including Nance.

What I realized after looking at the box score is Beilein isn't using Love properly. Love only had one 3 point attempt and he pulled down 18 rebounds. That basically says he isn't using Love to stretch the floor. Too much trying to have Love score out of the post.

I also think he has too much faith in Nance. There will be a learning curve for Beilein to adjust to the NBA game. I think at times he wanted to call plays when he should have just let guys go and make a play in transition.

The 48 minute game and the fact that the NBA game isn't just teams taking turns of having scoring runs like in college. The pace also didn't seem to fit the NBA. He wanted to call plays when the team had an advantage in transition and alot of his plays take too long to develop. You could see that 24 second shot clock didn't seem be taken into account in alot of his plays. The secondary read didn't come with urgency and guys had to hoist shots instead of find the open man because the clock ran down.

Yeah I felt there were a lot of timing errors. Too long to call tme outs, and strange rotation timing. I liked subbing guys out early, but then took oo long to come back in.

He's toying with lineups. He has 3 rookies and a disgruntled star player.

Ball movement early was really encouraging. I think you are totally right about not getting to 2nd and 3rd options quickly enough.(also one of Colin's biggest problems) Beilein doesn't have that feel yet.

Sexton looked pretty good. He needs to improve decision making, but I will give him time to adjust to his new role. He is still a potent scorer.

Garland looks great to me. He is obviously a kid. He was a little overwhelmed by length tonight as was Sexton and love. Cedi too.

Cedi looked good. No one really shot well, so he gets a pass as well. You can't leave him on the bench that long. I think Beilein might want to rotate guys in and out faster. I'm not sure they are in shape to play so fast, the passage dropped all game.

I think once some of the guard depth is traded, Beilein will have more flexibility to combat length by staggering Garland and Sexton. I was actually surprised by how many the played together tonight. I don't think they need to exclusively play together because both need the ball to keep building their PG skills.

Nothing about KPJ screams solid right now.

His shot, until otherwise proven, is broken.

His defense was better than i thought it would be for a rookie, he was able to get his own shot, ofcourse he didnt make it.

KPJ is a NBA player in the future, he needs game time and practice time.....lots of practice. But if he has drive he could possibly work himself into fringe all star level, he really has a tone of potential, we will see if he gets there though.

Ok now with emotions taken out I'll give my thoughts:

Positives:
- Garland just looks like he is gonna be very good. Fantastic court vision, would have had 7 assists if Love and Cedi could make wide open 3's. His jump shot is pure, great handle and change of pace off picks.
- Beilien limited Clarkson to 18 minutes. That is a positive.
- The defense was fantastic in the second half. Despite the small backcourt they really were able to stifle the Magic, which may not be the hardest thing to do.
- Tristan played well @lakers @clippers @anyone else that may want him
- Post match Coach B labeled Garland an 'elite playmaker' and theyre trying to get him on the ball and Sexton off the ball. I really like that.

Negatives:
- The line up of Delly, Clarkson, SF, Nance, TT was used twice and both times it failed. There is no spacing at all.
- KP really struggled
- Clarkson being Clarkson, rather Knight in the rotation.
- Offense for the most part was putrid, early on with the starters it looked decent.. then enter Jordan Clarkson to ruin everything good and holy.
- For a team that put a lot of emphasis on 3pt shooting they really can brick them.
- Would have liked Wade to play some mins, especially when they opted to go for that deathly Nance/TT combo

For some reason I am looking forward to the next game vs Pacers. First home game.
Wish Windler was healthy, really need a back up SF that can shoot. Mckinnie will probably play vs Pacers.

I just watched the game and this was not as bad as people are saying. The offense was sloppy and we missed a ton of open shots, but other than that I think there were a lot of encouraging signs. I thought Tristan played great, he might actually be a real asset. I usually can't stand Nance, but I thought he played really well and Clarkson wasn't really as enfuriating as usual. He couldn't get a bucket but I felt like he was playing within the offense, he wasn't over dribbling, I was actually kind of encouraged. I thought we competed pretty well defensively, if we didn't miss so many wide open shots, we might have got a W.

My observations:

Garland looks to be the real deal, great court vision, ball handler, and that shot is a thing of beauty
KPJ has the tools on both sides of the ball his shot will fall, a couple nice d and assists
Sexton needs to dribble less and pass quicker, shot is solid
TT is a leader and had a great game
Coach B is in the Wilkins mold
Delly will be good for Garland
Windler will get a lot of open looks
Henson and Zizic would really help
Clarkson this guy makes me yearn for Gee and I detested Gee
Love, Nance one can hope

I really liked seeing the young guys get minutes and the hustl and game play was a huge drop off when the second squad was in, the energy level and ability to score and defend was huge.

While the Cavs seemed over matched they started playing..but this is going to be a process, even though I don't want to say it.

i feel strangely optimistic after that game. Sure, we won’t win many games because our depth and talent aren’t very good, but the young guys all showed they could play and the coaching seemed to improve as the game went on wrt rotations and such. I think Garland looked great, Sexton looked solid, and KPJ showed flashes even though he struggled a lot. Just get rid of Clarkson and Nance and we should be a very watchable bad team which is all I can ask for.

I feel much the same. I think Nance has some utility on the team (esp. in a future that might not have Tristan) but Clarkson just goes into "Score At All Costs" mode so much. It's frustrating to watch. Even more so because hardly anyone else in the bench scores, which exacerbates the problem. KPJ creates his own shot pretty well, they just didn't go in last night.

The starters I'm high on. Cedi's "Korvering" is almost there. I am optimistic that Sexland will be an actual thing. Can't say enough good things about Garland. I was mad that the Lakers somehow got to pick before the Cavs after all that tanking, but it may have worked out better than we thought. Sexton off the ball is where he needs to be on this team. Tristan is solid and dependable (but he needs to chill with those midrange jumpers... he's not Anderson Varejao).

Starters played with heart (kept it from being a blowout), bench played like stench. Please, no more ill-advised Delly Trays. The "Clarkson Effect" is more curse than blessing.
