The Cavs catch a huge break with Rose unexpectedly being out which was a bridge too far for the Pistons. Without Griffin, Rose, Kennard, and Snell they were pretty much Drummond and a cast of backups.
That being said, the Cavs played well and were very balanced with a lot of players contributing. Start with 25 assists which contributed to 50% shooting. They won the battle of the boards 45-37 and held Drummond to 15 points and 8 boards, which is almost astonishing.
Kevin Love had 20 points in 24 minutes. TT had 17 and 11, bouncing back nicely from a tough stretch. Sexton got 23, which is not unusual, but those 5 assists are probably a career high. All five Cavs starters were +10 to +19 which is great to see, even against a depleted Pistons lineup.
Nance had a 10/5/3 line with 2 blocks and some excellent passing. McKinnie had 15 points in 25 minutes, hitting 3's and skying for dunks and put-backs. Best of all, Kevin Porter Jr is back. He looked a little rusty airballing a 3, but he was a +11 in 16 minutes as he was very active on defense and had a beautiful and-one on a driving layup.
It was a nice, balanced effort with good defense, rebounding, solid shooting, and a lot of assists. They only made 9 shots from long range and 10 free throws so most of their points came on 2-point shots, mostly in the paint. Outside of Love and McKinnie the Cavs were 1-for-12 on 3's so that was disappointing, but hey, we're never going to have a perfect game. I'm just glad to get a W after seven straight losses.
Last night I watched the Pelicans, with Zion Williamson back, take apart the Celtics so I'm not expecting another win tomorrow so it's good we got this one.
