Game Thread 2019-20 Season Game #49 | Cleveland Cavaliers vs Toronto Raptors | Jan 30th, 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This was a fun game for me. I saw some fight. The kids tried but couldn’t prevail against the better team.

I love Sexton off ball where he can focus on his scoring and the open pass if necessary.

I love Porter Jr. game. He had a bad passing game tonight with all those turnovers. He might be a baby Harden with defense.

Best Garland game in about a week.

Defense and turnovers are the Cavaliers main issues.

TT can rebound his ass off, but that slow ass gather is what’s holding him back. What happened to his hook shot?

I love when Love just shoot!

McKinnie had a rare shitty night tonight.

Cedi missed quite a bit of open shots and made some tough ones that I thought wouldn’t go in.

if the Cavaliers are gonna lose, I’d rather them lose like this instead of a blowout.

Well, the Cavs made it interesting, at the end, but I’ll be damned if they don’t trip over their dicks, in crunch-time. The amount of turnovers this team commits, especially down the stretch, is full-on INSANE.

I don't think it's weird that the 21 and younger crowd turn it over vs the champs or any other elite defensive team

I like to watch how Garland and Sexton do as a tandem (just totals, not necessarily playing together). Tonight was 16-33 for 39 points, 9 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 steals, one block and 6 turnovers. All around decent game but for the turnovers.

Outside of the turnovers the Cavs honestly generate a pretty solid amount of good looks. They don't make as many as they should.

It's the transition defense that has them sitting at the bottom of the league.

The Cavs played one of their best games of the year. With 1:18 to go the Cavs had a chance to tie the game with a Darius Garland free throw. But he missed, Norman Powell hit a contested corner three, then stole a pass for a breakaway dunk and that was the game. The Cavs buckled in the final minute, getting outscored 10-5 in the last 1:02. You could tell which team is the defending NBA champs.

The Raptors had won eight games in a row. They're on a roll, but the Cavs took them down to the final minute before the outcome was decided. No garbage time tonight.

The Cavs needed better ball security (21 turnovers to 13 for the Raps) and better 3-point shooting. Love was 6-for-9 while the rest of the team was 7-for-27 from downtown. They need to be better. Cedi missed four uncontested 3-pointers where he had all day to set his feet, sight in on the target, and hit the shot.

The Cavs had a stretch of 4:55 at the end of the third quarter where they only scored one point. Toronto scored 11. That probably cost them the game. They've lost a lot of games due to one really bad stretch.

They did a great job on the glass, outrebounding the Raptors 52-37 with 15 offensive boards.

In the battle of the small guards the Cavs held their own:

Lowry/VanVleet: 31 points, 12 rebounds, 17 assists, 5 steals, 5 turnovers

Sexton/Garland: 39 points, 9 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 steals, 6 turnovers

Advantage Raptors, but the Cavs young guards acquitted themselves pretty well. They just need a couple more assists and a couple less turnovers and they're right there.

The most interesting thing I saw was the lineup Beilein used to close the game. It was Garland, Sexton, Love, Porter, and Nance. IOW, the starting lineup with Porter in for Cedi and Nance in for Thompson. In my opinion, Porter had been playing better than Cedi since he got back and Nance does more for the team than Thompson. TT only scored 2 points in 27 minutes, although he got five offensive rebounds. Nance had 13 and 9 in 26 minutes. He blocked a shot, drew a charge, and hit a 3-pointer. TT didn't play badly, but Nance just brings a greater variety of skills. He did miss a couple of point blank shots, though, and he does that too often.

I'm wondering if that might be the Cavs starting lineup at some point this season, or at least the lineup Beilein uses to close out winnable games. Cedi and TT have their strengths but also significant limitations. At this point in the season I think Nance and Porter are playing better, although Porter had a tough night with seven turnovers.

You knew the Cavs weren't going to win once they brought Siakam and Ibaka back in the game, but the Cavs kept charging ahead and made it close. But the veteran, battle tested Raptors weren't going to let this one get away. In the final decisive minute there was no comparison between the teams.

From a Kelsey Russo column in The Athletic:

"Part of the Cavs’ early game plan was to seek out the corner 3s, because teams struggle to get into the lane against the Raptors. They found more of their open shots were on the perimeter. They just struggled to sink those shots.

“We’re not just going to be able to go in the lane and score on them as other teams because they just get protected,” Beilein said. “But we have to, eyes on the basket, but then spraying out. And we did it several times, we could do it more.”"

Like I said, the Cavs who are not named Kevin Love were 7-for-27 on 3's, and many of those missed 3's were totally uncontested as you pointed out. Until the Cavs get better at knocking down open 3's they're not going to win a lot of games, especially against teams with rim protectors like Ibaka who make layups and floaters difficult.

Speaking of the paint, Tristan Thompson needs to get his shot off more quickly. He gets the ball down low, usually on an offensive rebound, then dribbles three or four times while muscling his way into position. Then he pump fakes and sometimes pivots the other way before launching his jump hook. This takes so long that other defenders are dropping down and either stripping him or blocking his shot. He's only 6'9" so he's blockable when he shoots from a standing position off pump fakes.

One big difference in last night's game was the Raptors' center, Serge Ibaka, is a 7-foot shot blocker who can also knock down 3's. He hit a huge one to put the Raps up by four with two minutes to go. By contrast, TT had to shoot a corner three with the shot clock expiring in the first quarter. The shot was uncontested but he missed the rim by about a foot.

I love TT's leadership and effort, but he doesn't protect the rim very well and he can't hit 3's like other centers like Ibaka and Lopez. He does create a lot of second chance opportunities, however. Too bad we can't combine John Henson's shot blocking, TT's offensive rebounding, and Larry Nance Jr's passing, 3-point shooting, and rim running into one player.

From a Chris Fedor column:

"In more than 18 second-half minutes, the Cavs outscored the Raptors by one point with Porter out there, using him alongside Darius Garland, Collin Sexton, Larry Nance Jr. and Kevin Love in a new closing lineup that at least one player who spoke with cleveland.com “really liked.”"

I won't be surprised if this is the "new closing lineup" for the next few games. And maybe a starting lineup at some point.

I don't remember this incident.

From the Toronto Sun:

Lowry a six-time all-star, but another fan shove dampens his joy, and Raptors win

But the Cavs weren’t done. Lowry can’t play all of the minutes, even if sometimes he comes close, and he was rested to start the fourth. Cleveland cut 10 points off Toronto’s lead while Lowry sat. He returned and keyed a 6-0 run, but the young Cavs showed some fight in battling back to within one.

Larry Nance Jr. had a big blocked shot on Siakam, followed by an alley-oop, to keep the Cavs close, but Ibaka tapped out a rebound, Lowry made a great save (and ran into the fan to do so, which was followed by the push) and Ibaka hit a three-pointer.

Still, the Cavs got into the paint and scored and then Siakam turned the ball over on an offensive foul, giving the Cavs a a chance to tie after Darius Garland was fouled on a drive to the basket. Garland missed his second free throw though, Powell hit a clutch three-pointer with a minute remaining, then came away with the steal and dunk after some spectacular team defence and the Raptors closed it out.

Lowry was involved in an infamous play in Oakland during the NBA Finals, when a fan shoved him and said some words to him. That fan, a Golden State Warriors minority owner, was banned for a year and fined. While this incident wasn’t nearly as severe, several Raptors were displeased by a repeat incident.

“You’re diving for a loose ball and a fan’s pushing you, it’s unbelievable man,” Lowry said. “Our fans, our NBA fans, shouldn’t be represented by people like him. It’s the second time it’s happened to me and it’s kind of getting crazy because next time it happens, I don’t know if I’ll be able to control myself. Hopefully, I will but … I couldn’t really react because I was in mid-play, but it will come up. Fans like that shouldn’t be in our buildings, in our arenas.”

He landed on a guy pretty hard and the guy gave him a little shove as he got up.

It looked like the fan shoved him in the back toward the court as Lowry was getting to his feet. It actually helped Lowry get back on the court. It didn't look like a big deal on the video although Lowry whipped his head around to look back at the fan for a split second.
