This is a very good team since Zion showed up. They lost the first two games when he only played 18 and 21 minutes. One he started playing regular starter's minutes they're 8-4 with the losses coming to the Lakers, Bucks, Rockets, and OKC. They have won 5 of 7 and are three games out of the playoffs so this game means a lot. The Cavs will definitely have their hands full, especially with Drummond still out.
The Pelis are 4th in the NBA in scoring at 115.8 ppg. They're 28th in scoring defense at 117.0 ppg. Their games tend to be high scoring affairs. Since Zion started playing full time their scoring average is up to 124.0, which would make them easily the highest scoring team in the league if it were over the full season. When they beat the Cavs last month in Cleveland it was 125-111.
The Pelicans can fill it up big time. They have six players averaging in double figures led by Brandon Ingram who is having a sensational season with a line of 24.7/6.3/4.3. Zion is averaging 23.3 ppg and 7.1 rebounds. Holiday is a 19.2 ppg. He went ballistic on the Cavs last month with 28 points, 8 assists, 3 steals, and 4 blocks. The Pelicans starters destroyed the Cavs' starters but the Cavs bench kept the score from getting totally out of hand.
The Cavs did not have Garland that game and Nick Exum started. He was ineffective and only played 18 minutes with 4 points and a rebound. In the last game Exum, Henson, McKinnie and Delly combined for 21 points in 79 minutes. Only Delly might play tonight. Getting Garland back will help.
The Pelis shot 53.4% from the field in that game, including 62 points in the paint. It was a layup drill for the Pelicans. This time the Cavs will be switching more so I'm hoping to see fewer times when the dribbler comes around the screen and sails in for the uncontested layup. I just hope Garland and Sexton don't get switched off on Zion. That won't end well. Thompson, Love and Nance need to be ready to help on defense.
The goal will be to hold them to 120 points or under, which would be a modest 5-point improvement over last time, while scoring 115 or more. With Garland back and without non-scorers like Exum, Henson, and McKinnie playing all those minutes we should be able to improve a bit on that 111 points, although playing on the road is tougher. We need Ante to hold his own when TT is on the bench and we need to figure out a way not to let Holiday kick our butt again.
