The Cavs came out flat and were outscored by 18 points in the first quarter, but they outscored the Pelicans by 6 points the rest of the way. Giving up 43 in the first quarter was too much to overcome as the Pelis got layup after layup. But the defense improved and held the Pelicans to 73 points in the last three quarters which is very good considering the Pelis are 4th in the NBA in scoring and that's with Zion missing most of the games so far.
With Zion playing starter's minutes the Pelis came in averaging 124 ppg, so holding them to 116 is not bad, especially since we gave up 125 last time we played them. Too bad we weren't ready to compete in the first quarter.
Kevin Love seemed out of it from the start and only played 27 minutes. He never got going offensively and Zion abused him defensively.
The Cavs could have made a game of it with better 3-point shooting. Sexton and Delly were great, combining to go 8-for-13 from deep, but the rest of the team was only 3-for-18. Porter, Love, and Osman combined to go 2-for-13.
The Pelicans just had too much talent as Ingram, Zion, and Holiday scored 29, 24, and 22 points and combined to go 32-for-51 from the field. There was no stopping them. Ingram was a man among boys with a line of 29/6/7 and a +25 in 33 minutes.
Porter and Love had off nights, combining to shoot 11-for-30. We needed better shooting from them. You can't ask the Cavs to hold the Pelis to less than 116, so they needed everybody to shoot well and it just didn't happen tonight. We need to score more than 104 points against the team ranked 28th in scoring defense that was giving up 117 per game.
