Game Thread 2019-20 Season Game #8 | Cleveland Cavaliers @ Washington Wizards | Nov 8th, 2019

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I wanted Hachimura. He’s going to be a good player.

He was probably my favorite player in the draft. It will be interesting to see how he develops over the years. I think he is the size, speed, and build most teams will look for as a PF going forward.

Sexton's shot selection needs some work but I thought he did a great job defensively, was playing up on Beal and making it hard on him to really get into a rhythm. Good team effort, great win.

It will be interesting to see who teams assign to Sexton and Garland as they progress. Garland got the easy defender in IT tonight.

Sexton seems like he want to be a good defender and I think he will take the harder assignment this year to work at being a better defender.

This game would have been closer if the refs hadn’t constantly bailed KLove out on calls — he flailed around looking for fouls and got all kinds of star treatment

My kid was really disappointed the Wizards couldn’t come back so I ended up having to root for them

IT kind of killed the Wizards..he borders on unplayable now that he’s a 15 PPG type scorer, that doesn’t make up for his horrible defense

TT looks great

Had a suite for the game tonight and it was delicious

Sexton has more upper body strength and possibly always will so he should get the bigger guard

I wanted Hachimura. He’s going to be a good player.
You know me - I have been watching him since high school so I am very proud of Rui. His mid range game is phenomenal- wish they had a guy who would be able to pass to him more. I always wished he would be a Cavalier - so many Japan fans would be Cleveland fans. But regardless Rui’s ceiling is going to be fun to watch.

Beilein has a loooong way to go as far as being a good in game coach. Bad rotations as in set rotations that he comes with from home, lack of adjustments, poor use of timeouts, and above all bad defensive assignments. There was no reason to have Love guard Hachimura.

Beilein needs to dump his set rotations and ride guys that are hot and also adjust his rotations according to dynamic matchups. I mean come on. Also, Garland gets hot with 8 points and he subs him out. Please...what gives?! Let your struggling player get on track and develop confidence whenever you can.

Garland for more than half the time is like a PG in JV running point setting others up from past mid court just waiting to imitate actions. No, Coach needs to run plays for him and to allow him to create.

As far as Love is concerned, he needs to play with more energy. He doesn't get back on defense, he doesn't help at all off the ball. Despite his stat line I thought that was a very bad game by Love all-around. This team wants to play fast and he gives up easy shots at the rim and doesn't run in transition on both ends.

Sexton missed way too much open players tonight. Just total tunnel vision. Garland, Cedi were open numerous times with their hands up in frustration. Also took too many off rhythm shots.

I liked his defense. Scrappy which is always good against Beal.

TT also gets tunnel vision, especially after he gets a rebound and there ae usually 1-2 guys open from behind the 3pt line. He is effective down low, but he still needs to make that pass.

Kevin Porter with a great game. I loved seeing the PnR action. I want more.

Clarkson improved his vision. Passes more than Sexton. Thought he was good.

It looked like the Cavs couldn't block out on if their life depended on it in the 3rd and beginning of the 4th and I thought defensive rebounding is suppose to be one of the Cavs strengths but Washington was getting multiple chances each time. They seemed clean this up in midway through the fourth. I would be curious to know what adjustment was made if any.

I don't know how often Garland was guarded by IT but that undoubtedly helped his confidence and numbers.

Sexton had his best defensive game I have seen so far. That's pretty encouraging even if he didn't shoot well.

Joe Beilein might or might not be a good NBA coach, its obviously too early to tell, but he is a coach which is probably more than you can say about Tyrone (just be aggressive) Lue or Larry (not sure if this head coaching business is what I really want to do) Drew.

Crap. We lost ?

Crap. We lost ?

You know we didn't.

Cavs played well and got to the FT line a shit ton. When things got tough we didn't make adjustments and no TO were called. We lost the lead because of poor defensive lays by Love, lack of adjustments by Beilein and some players taking dumb shots. I'm glad the players stayed strong and still fought and actually won.

I'm just critical because this should have been a blowout.

The fact that the players stayed strong and fought hard has a lot to do with coaching. I think Beilein is doing a heck of a job. Maybe I’m just used to bad coaching, but I’ve been pretty impressed.

You are right.

I think he is a great teacher and a motivator. Nevertheless, he will need to scrap that set college rotations and be more mindful and better with his timeouts.

I can't lie though, Love's defense was really frustrating to watch. And there was no reason to have him guard Hachimura to begin with, so that was a bad decision by Beilein.

It looked like the Cavs couldn't block out on if their life depended on it in the 3rd and beginning of the 4th and I thought defensive rebounding is suppose to be one of the Cavs strengths but Washington was getting multiple chances each time.

The Wizards came in 5th in offensive rebounds per game. They are very good at it. They had 17 offensive boards last night, led by guard Troy Brown Jr with five. They did foul the Cavs a few times going for offensive boards.

I was disappointed in the Cavs' defense when the Wizards made their comeback. It was uncontested dunk after dunk after dunk as the Wizards kept running the same center pick-and-roll to perfection. The Cavs guard would follow the ball handler around the screen and down the lane while the Cavs' big would fall back trying to prevent the lob while still contesting the layup or floater. In the end he would have to switch off on the ball which set up a bounce pass and an easy slam. Over and over again.

But in the end they held a team that was averaging 115 ppg to 100 in their own building, so the defense was very good, especially considering all the second chances from the 17 offensive rebounds. Bryant and Hachimura combined to go 21-for-29 so that needs to be addressed the next time they play these guys.

Love was a +4 and had two blocks so his defense wasn't that bad. The guy whose defense concerns me is Nance. It seems like every shot he contests goes in and his defensive numbers are awful. On one play he switched off on Beal, fouled him, and Beal still make the layup and 3-point play.

I did not realize Washington was such a good offensive rebounding team. They didn't seem to get any after the middle of the 4th, do you know what the Cavs did to stop them?
