This game reminded me of a modern NBA team playing against a throwback team. The Clippers put up 34 shots from downtown to 10 for the Cavs. The Clippers made 20 of those 3's to four for the Cavs, who were a staggering -48 on 3-point shots. You have no chance in this league if you get outscored by 48 points from deep.
The Clippers apparently were irritated when the Cavs trailed by only 3 points at halftime and they came out loaded for bear in the third quarter, quickly getting out to a double-digit lead as Paul George poured in 16 points in the quarter on his way to a 36-point game. He was clearly a man among boys. The Cavs have little chance against really talented 6'7" wings like George and Jayson Tatum. They do whatever they want.
Drummond was horrible with a -33 in 22 minutes. Allen was a +11 in 26 minutes, so the difference between the two centers was 44 points.
The Cavs' starters were all between -22 and -33. I thought the Clippers would be tired and dragging a little tonight but if they were it did not affect their 3-point shooting as they went 20-for-34. I said in the preview the Cavs needed to aggressively defend the perimeter and make the Clippers drive, but they were unable to do that.
The Cavs need to add the 3-point shot to their game if they want to beat anybody decent.
As I see it Paul George pretty much beat the Cavaliers by himself; 36 points on 20 shots with six assists. Serge Ibaka still has it with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks in only 20 minutes. Leonard had 24 points on 9-for-14. One team had star players, one team didn't. One team could hit 3's, the other couldn't. A 3-point shooting team with a couple of All-Stars will beat a balanced team with no stars that shoots 2's pretty much every time.
