The Knicks are 8-11, having lost three in a row. They lost a close one to the Cavs two weeks ago today, 106-103 in Cleveland. However, that was a different Cavaliers team than the Knicks will face tonight. Sexton, Garland, and Windler were out with injuries and Allen and Prince had not yet been cleared to play. So take that Cavs team that beat the Knicks two weeks ago, subtract Larry Nance, Jr and add Sexton, Garland, Windler, Allen, and Prince and you would think the Cavs will roll.
Damyean Dotson played 40 minutes in that Cavs win. They had no point guard. Lamar Stevens came off the bench for 21 minutes. Nance played 44 of 48 minutes with a line of 14/9/5. According to ESPN Nance is questionable for tonight.
Julius Randle had a line of 28/6/6 that night so he will be a problem. A rookie shooting guard named Immanual Quickley scored 23 off the bench. Nerlins Noel came off the bench to block six shots in 17 minutes with a +15. Noel and Quickley kept the Knicks in it along with Randle.
The Knicks are 3-4 at home and 5-7 on the road.
The Knicks are the lowest scoring team in the NBA, averaging 101.5 ppg, almost four points below the next worst which is Cleveland. In terms of scoring defense the Knicks are #1 while the Cavs are #7. Obviously this shapes up to be a low scoring affair with two bads offenses going against two great defenses.
However, the Cavs scored 106 points two weeks ago and they’ve picked up a lot of scoring since then while losing only Nance’s 14 points if he doesn’t play.
The Knicks and Cavs are tied for last in three-point rate at 31.7% so these are the two teams who are most averse to launching 3’s in the league, which may be why they’re 29th and 30th in scoring. The Knicks are 23rd in 3-point percentage. They’re 28th in 2-point shooting percentage so they’re just not good at putting the ball in the hoop from anywhere.
The Knicks are 22nd in defensive rebound percentage so they will give up some second chance opportunities. They foul a lot, ranking 27th in fouls per defensive play.
Defensively the Knicks rank #1 in 3-point percentage so they defend the perimeter very well. They’re only 17th in 2-point percentage so it might behoove the Cavs to attack the rim.
