Game Thread 2020-21 Season | Game #27 | Cavs @ Trailblazers | February 12, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Refs trash. How do you defend that when you’re straight up and down?

I’m glad JBB is closing with Sexton, Garland and Okoro. They need all the minutes they can get. Shit never made sense.

Our starters are in against their bench, their bench is just kinda messing around, and we are still getting whipped

They don't win this game by playing just Allen+McGee, but its way more competitive.

Also, Okoro is killing this team. But I'm ok with it, to an extent.

That said, the Cavs have an uncanny knack for picking rookies who then proceed to be some of the absolute worst of the worst players in the league that season.

Okoro this year, Garland last year, Bennett. Like, bottom 5 RPM type of players. Out of ALL players. All 400+ of them.

Garland starting to annoy me. Shoot the fucking ball. You’re open.

What the hell are the coaches coaching?

The only winners on our side tonight so far are McGee & Wade. At least they don’t have to take ownership of this travesty

Duh GARLAND. That’s what you gotta do!!!! SHOOOOOOOT WHEN YOU HAVE SPACE.

Horrible possession by Sexton. What the hell was that?

Why is the Cavs pace so slow? Sexton is a track athlete that can run. Like wtf is going on?

He has no one willing to run with him. For a guard, Garland really doesn't push the pace. Cedi might be the only wing that is willing to push the pace. Sexton could get alot more easy point if they were just willing to push the pace with him.

Id imagine all defensive type coaches have slow offenses.

JB really isn’t a good coach, don’t think he’s the guy to lead us out of a rebuild. Maybe if they ran some offense Okoro would actually look ok. Instead of just “go stand in a corner”

Cavs lost this one right out of the gate when they got down 22-4. The game was effectively over at that point. The Blazers were up 21 at halftime and coasted the rest of the way. And that's with two starters out.

Apparently the game plan was to go right at Kantor with Drummond. AD took four shots in the first four minutes and missed all of them. He also committed two fouls and got jerked after five minutes on the floor. He ended up with a -20 in 17 minutes.

Kanter, OTOH, had 21 points and 13 rebounds, including 7 offensive boards. He outmuscled Allen repeatedly on the offensive glass to get put-backs. Allen had a nice game offensively with 22 points in 24 minutes and that's with missing 7 free throws. But he couldn't keep Kantor off the offensive glass and he committed three turnovers.

Garland was -31 in 33 minutes, meaning the Cavs were +14 in 15 minutes when he was on the bench. He gets abused defensively.

Sexton had a nice game with 25 points, 5 assists, 2 steals, and only 2 turnovers in 41 minutes. They started double-teaming him like Denver did and he did a good job of passing out of it and getting the ball moving to create an open shot.

Windler had a double-double and I like his activity, especially on the glass (10 rebounds!) but he needs to hit more 3's. He was 2-for-7 and missed a few wide open 3's that were uncontested. Gary Trent Jr, by contrast, was 4-for-6. No question the Cavs need to get better at making open 3-point shots.

Speaking of which, Cedi played only 7 minutes, which is probably his season low. He seems to be in JBB's dog house. Cedi has made only 3 of his last 22 shots from the 3-point line. He simply can't be on the floor if he's not making 40% or better on 3's - his other skills are negligible. It looks like Windler may have moved ahead of him on the depth chart. Now I'd like to see Windler move ahead of Okoro who is averaging 5.6 points and 2.0 rebounds in February.

Does any other team have a starting forward who is averaging fewer points and rebounds than Okoro? I doubt it. When Okoro is in the game we're playing 4 on 5. In 27 minutes he had 0 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist. He committed more fouls (4) than points, rebounds, and assists combined! Stevens is playing better than Okoro right now.

All of the Portland starters were between +16 and +27 and only one of them played more than 30 minutes. Trent had 26 points on only 12 shots. Carmelo had 23 points in 20 minutes. Watching 20-year-old Okoro trying to guard 36-year-old Carmelo was like watching a puppy trying to keep up with a big dog. A lot of energy and effort but no success.

In summary the Cavs started the game with the wrong approach, which was to have Drummond go one-on-one against Kanter. They also fouled the Blazers relentlessly. I think the Blazers were already in the bonus at the 8:30 mark.

I was right in guessing that JBB would no longer start both Dre and Allen. After the game JBB talked about how they need to get Dre back to playing like he was earlier in the season. Drummond has 12 points in his last two games and has played only 33 minutes. Allen has 40 points in the last two games and has played 50 minutes. I wonder if JBB is getting ready to make a change in the starting lineup.

I would like to see a lineup of Garland, Sexton, Prince, Windler, and Allen. Not much defense, but at least we'd have five guys who can score and it's not like we're playing any defense now.

I'm kind of done with Dre, Cedi and Okoro. When Nance and Love come back I would add them to the rotation along with Okoro. He needs to play if he's going to develop into anything.
