The Cavs try to start a winning streak as they take on the Houston Rockets in Rocket Mortgage Arena. The Rocks roll in with an 11-18 record, 6-11 on the road, and losers of eight in a row. It’s another matchup of “almost worsts” as both teams are in 14th place in their Conferences.
The Rockets lost their last game on Monday to the 14-16 Bulls 120-100. The Rockets, playing at home, were down 26 points after three quarters. Ex-Cav David Nwaba led in scoring and rebounding, most of it probably coming in garbage time. The Rockets are stuck on the launch pad right now.
On Monday they started the following lineup: Tucker (6’5”), House (6’6”), Tate (6’4”), Gordon (6’3”) and Wall (6’3”). No centers and only PJ Tucker is listed as a power forward. On top of that, Gordon and Tucker are listed as game time decisions. Gordon has an ankle problem. Victor Oladipo is also a game time decision.
Their best player after the Harden trade is probably C Christian Wood, but he’s out with an injury, missing the last eight games. They were 11-10 with him, 0-8 without. DeMarcus Cousins was just released leaving the Rockets fresh out of centers other than Justin Patton, a 3rd year guy averaging 4.0 ppg on 33.3% from the field.
In their last four games the Rockets have allowed an average of 119 points per game. Their season average is 111.6, so the loss of Wood has impacted their defense.
Former Cav Dante Exum is also out and Kevin Porter Jr is in the G League.
John Wall is playing well, averaging 23.0 ppg and 6.9 assists in February. Eric Gordon is averaging 18.5 ppg but is questionable. After those two nobody who will play tonight is averaging more than 9.9. Victor Oladipo is averaging 18.4 ppg but he hasn’t played in almost two weeks and may not go tonight.
As for season stats, the Rockets rank 23rd in scoring but that was with Harden for 8 games and Wood for 20. What jumps out is they rank 2nd in the NBA in 3-point rate at 46.1%. Even with Harden gone their philosophy is to still shoot as many as possible. However, they are dead last in 3-point percentage, making only 34.0%. You’d think if they’re the worst team in the league at making 3-point shots they wouldn’t shoot that many, but they jack up more than any team but one. I guess that makes them optimists. They're going to keep shooting them regardless of the results.
The Cavs rank 29th in 3-point percentage at 34.1% so these are the two worst teams in the league in terms of long range accuracy. Could be a lot of dents in the rims after tonight's game.
The Rockets are weak at offensive rebounding (27th), assists per play (27th), and opponent’s steals per play (26th). The Cavs are near the top in steals so they should get quite a few tonight.
This team is 6-11 on the road, has lost eight straight, just got blown out at home by a below average team, and is missing their two best centers. They are probably the smallest team in the league and the worst at making 3-pointers. There’s a lot to like about this opponent.
