The 4th quarter had been by far the worst for the Cavs this year but tonight was a different story as they outscored the Spurs by 7 in the 4th to win by 5. Markkanen's dunk broke the ice. This was like watching a sumo match that goes on for five minutes. You felt like whoever gets the next bucket will win and Marky stepped up.On top of all the goings on tonight, it feels good to finally win one of these games.
Feels like every back and forth close game they've been in this season they've lost late. Team blows opponents out so much, its nice to see them grind out a game where they have to get consecutive stops and have to execute plays down the stretch to put a game away.
Wasn't the prettiest thing, but got the job done. These guys, coach included, are still babies in the NBA experience. Need all the growing opportunities they can get, tonight was one.
The point guards were amazing; Murray with a line of 30/14/8 and Garland responded with 32/4/8. Darius had ONE turnover in 37 minutes. As a team the Cavs only had 9 and that was huge in a close win. Garland and Murray should be facing off in more than one All-Star game in the future.
This game should not have been that close, but for the Cavs poor free throw shooting. They were 14-for-24 at the line, which is inexcusable at this level. It's not like Andre Drummond is still on the team, but that's who they shot like.
Jarrett Allen dominated his matchups with 17 points and 16 boards. Poetl and Landale combined for 5 points. Mobley played 39 minutes with 15 points and 6 boards.
The Spurs average 115 points per game at home and the Cavs held them to 109. The defense was pretty good, but the Spurs just were hotter than normal from deep.
That half-court prayer by Garland that went in at the end of the first half turned out to be a pretty big shot. Also Cedi's 3-pointer at the buzzer at the end of the third.
It was great to see the Cavs impose their will late in the 4th as they are below .500 this year in late and close games. Definitely a sign of growth. But unfortunately, their key guys played a lot of minutes, especially Mobley, and they have a game tomorrow. I hope tonight's win doesn't result in a loss to a bad team the next night.
