Game Thread | 2021-2022 Season | Game #47 | Thunder @ Cavs | Jan. 22, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This was the most unsatisfying and frustrating win of the season. 22 turnovers? 17 missed free throws? 6-for-27 on 3's? Are you kidding?

Take away Markkanen and the rest of the Cavs were 3-for-23 from deep. Shocking and embarrassing.

This should have been an easy win but for the excessive turnovers, the putrid free throw shooting, and the horrible 3-point shooting. Fortunately we were playing the lowest scoring team in the NBA and, like they say, defense never goes into a slump.

On top of that Markkanen went down with what at best is a high ankle sprain so just when he was getting on a major roll he'll be out for weeks.

Even Dort getting ejected didn't get the Cavs going. Every time it looked like they were about to separate they had a spate of turnovers and missed FT's.

16 points in the 4th quarter? Another embarrassment.

The starting lineup did pretty well as they were all between +10 and +23. But when Garland sat down the Cavs had nothing on the offensive end. Goodwin was a -16 in 9 minutes. Garland had to play 39 minutes or the Cavs would have lost at home against the fourth worst record in the league.

Cedi was -8, Stevens -15, and Love -8. We got no help from the bench other than Wade, who was a +9 in 13 minutes. It could have been higher if he hadn't gone 1-for-5 on free throws.

SGA did everything he could with 29 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. He was a -1 while the other four starters were -16 to -28. Fortunately for the Cavs the Thunder were only 12-for-41 on 3's.

Carr was right; the Cavs played down to their opponents' level. Ugliest win of the year, and now Marky is out for a while. It looks like Wade will step in and everybody else will stay in their current roles. Ugh.

Garland was a team high +23 despite committing 8 turnovers. He continues to try and force passes into tiny windows. Just have to hope his judgement improves.

Cedi had another bad shooting night, going 1-for-5 on 3's. I think he's now made 6 of his last 37. Okoro had five turnovers.

When the unit of Goodwin, Cedi, Love, Stevens, and Allen/Mobley was in there was no offense whatsoever. Nobody in that group can beat his man off the dribble or create a shot for himself or a teammate. JBB wanted to give DG and Mobley more rest at the start of the 4th quarter but couldn't afford to do it because our bench was stinking the place up. Without Sexton, Rubio, Markkanen, and Rondo our bench depth is a big problem.

I find it real easy to root for this team.
Sure. This current iteration of the Cavs is a very likable team, most of the time.

But in 50 years, we’ve had a very limited number of likable teams who have won. And only one that won it all. THAT is the source of our misery.

6 for 37 - WOOF! Bad Cedi is back with a VENGEANCE!

Looking ahead, we should be able to tread water and play .500 or even a little better basketball for a stretch down Mark until he gets back or we make a trade.

We are running out of guys who can score.

One takeaway from him getting hurt is Mobley is guaranteed to win rookie of the year. He was likely to anyway, but the net effect of losing Mark is we will score less as a team, but he will score more. He will get way more rebounds. The team offense is worse, but the defense likely improves slightly strictly by the numbers.

Basically his scoring and rebounds go up, while our defense gives up less points which reflects well on his case. We will have a lot of games like tonight against the Pistons multiple times and other bad teams. We will have to keep playing hard as we will only be up 6 points rather than 16, so we will see more 104-94 games rather than letting off the gas on the defensive side. So it might not be real, but will look better on paper I think

I only care about the team success and we are worse, but silver lining and forces Koby’s hand to make something happen and he isn’t lost for the season. If we had to lose another guy, this is the stretch we could stay afloat.

Our current healthy SG/SF rotation is: Okoro, Stevens, Cedi, Wade, and Windler
Our backup PG is Goodwin

ANY win we get, we should be thankful and grateful for.
I would just give Stevens, Wade, and Windler MORE burn, and Okoro and Cedi LESS burn.

Mobley with 17 rebounds. He heard people talking.
I got yelled at for suggesting Mobley’s rebounding was an issue the last several nights…. Like literally yelled at by internet thugs….

I’m still devastated…

Windler didn’t play because we were facing a bunch of physical players and this was a junkyard dog game.
Windler not being able to get some major burn vs the 14-31 big time physical OKC Thunder is not an issue at all…

I am fine with experimentation and change involving any of those five players.

What I do think is silly and overblown is when people dig in about the minutes or lack of minutes for any of the five as a cardinal sin of coaching. Simply put, none of them at this point are good enough on a holistic both ways level to get up in arms and act like more or less of any of them would have a substantials, long view impact on winning and losing this season.

Windler makes a lot of tough guy rebounding motion when grabbing rebounds with no one around him. I would not call him a junk yard dog. And I’m not going to take his rebounding numbers while at Belmont as some sort of indicator he can do that in the NBA

Have also seen make plenty of turnovers himself

Now I am not against giving him some more minutes, especially with Markannen now, but up until now, I think the outcry for his not playing more is overblown.
Would love to see him make me look stupid over a multiple week sample Zoe’s, if he gets one
Windler is the best rebounding non-big on the roster. I know this isn't a particularly high bar, but the stats support this. Okoro and Osman are both absolutely dreadful rebounders. He also turns the ball over less than them because he generally knows his role on offense and plays within it. And then to top it off there's the fact that he's a far superior shooter to any other wing player on the team.

He's a willing and able shooter, he moves with purpose without the ball, he's an aggressive rebounder, not awful defensively, and he plays hard. Unless there's something going on behind the scenes that we aren't privy to, Windler should be playing more.

I'm not suggesting he's the answer to all of the Cavs problems, but his skillset just happens to fill exactly what the Cavs need, yet he barely sees the floor. Why? For Cedi Osman, Lamar Stevens, Isaac Okoro and Dean Wade.
