A second consecutive ugly win. 23 turnovers against OKC; 19 tonight. The free throw shooting was a little better at 60%. The 3-point shooting was better thanks to Love, Rondo, and Wade, who combined to go 12-for-22. The rest of the team was 1-for-14.
The Cavs weathered the loss of Sexton and then Rubio and continued to win. But losing Markkanen AND Allen on top of that really put a strain on the offense. Fortunately, the Knicks are the 3rd worst scoring team in the league and the Cavs held them to 93 points, barely enough to eke out a win.
The Knicks handed the win to the Cavs by going 11-for-22 on free throws in a 2-point loss. The Cavs almost gave it back going 12-for-20. I think the kids who played at halftime could have done better than either team from the stripe.
Cedi was 0-for-5 in 11 minutes and didn't play the second half. He is one lost puppy. Mobley had a solid line of 15/12/5 but had four turnovers and went 3-for-7 from the line, including missing 3 of 4 in the final minute that opened the door for the Knicks to steal a win.
Love was huge with 20 points in 24 minutes. With Allen and Marky out we needed someone to step up with some offense and Kevin stepped up. Dean Wade was 4-for-7 from deep and we needed all of them. He had 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals in 35 minutes. That's what we need from him in Marky's spot. Okoro had 14 points and 6 rebounds (who says he can't rebound?) for a team high +18.
Garland is fighting a back problem as he was 6-for-19, but he nailed a huge corner 3 to give the Cavs a 94-91 lead with 1:23 to go after Okoro kept the missed shot by Mobley alive.
The Cavs did a nice job on Randle, holding him to 6-for-17. His best move was pushing off with the left arm and the refs let him do it. Toppin and Grimes kept the Knicks in the game, going 7-for-10 on 3's and combining for 25 points off the bench. Toppin was a +20 in 15 minutes. This was the second straight game he stuck it to the Cavs. In two games against Cleveland this year he has 24 points in 26 minutes along with 8 boards. Very impressive offense off the bench.
The Cavs opened the 3rd quarter with a spate of turnovers; 4 of them in the first 2:30. Then they stopped turning the ball over and went on a 17-3 run led by Love's hot shooting from deep. But in the 4th quarter they went 5:14 without a single field goal as they had another one of those stretches where nobody could make a bucket. It's like bad offense is contagious, although Garland's back problem was a factor.
Dean Wade broke the ice with a huge 3-pointer to beat the shot clock at 4:27 to put the Cavs up by six. They scored only 5 points in the last 4 minutes but it was just enough thanks to good defense and bad free throw shooting by the Knicks.
On the Knicks final possession down by 1 with 15 seconds remaining they got the ball to Randle isolated on Wade on the left side, which Randle seems to prefer. Wade stayed in front of him as Randle started his move. Rondo dropped down just far enough to force Randle to pick up the ball and kick it to Barrett, who was open for a long 3 after Rondo helped on Randle. Fortunately, Barrett missed and Mobley got the huge defensive rebound.
I never thought I'd see Randle pass off when he had the chance to hit a game-winner and being guarded by the Cavs' 3rd string power forward, but he respected Wade enough to give up the ball. If the Knicks were smart they would have put Grimes at the top so if Randle was doubled it would be Grimes taking the game winner. He was smoking hot from deep.
An ugly win but the undermanned Cavs gutted it out. They were lucky the Knicks missed 10 free throws but credit the defense along with Love and Okoro stepping up and putting some points on the board.
The Cavs will get blown out by Milwaukee on Wednesday if they don't cut back on the turnovers and start making more free throws. Hopefully, Allen will be able to play.
