The home stand continues with a game against the 76ers, who are 41-26 overall. They have been much better on the road with a record of 22-11. They seem to have hit a small glitch in their last three games, however. They got pounded 129-100 at home against the Nets, were taken to overtime by 18-52 Orlando, and lost by 4 at home to Denver. But they’ve won 7 of 10 so they were playing very well before the last three games. And there's no disgrace losing a close one to the Nuggets.
These teams have played twice in the last five weeks, with the Cavs losing 103-93 and 125-119. The Cavs played very well against the Sixers in Philly 12 days ago, but ran out of gas at the end. Garland played 43 minutes and was 1-for-6 in the 4th quarter. The were down by 4 points with 1:24 to go and had a chance but Embiid got a shooter’s bounce on a one-footed fallaway from the top of the key to seal it.
The difference this time around is that we don’t have Jarrett Allen to keep Embiid from destroying us single-handedly. Allen held Embiid to 22 points the last game and scored 20 himself. After watching Adebayo, Vucevic, and Zubac/Hartenstein back the skinny Mobley down and consistently get great position at the rim, I don’t see how we keep Embiid from having another 40-point game unless we double him, which creates open 3’s for Harden, Maxey, and others.
Maxey had 33 points the last game on 10-for-15. James Harden had 25 and went 11-or-12 at the line as the refs called a foul if anybody so much as breathed on him.
My take is that the Sixers have just too much talent, especially since the Cavs will be playing without Allen, Wade, and Rondo. Both teams have had a day off and the Sixers will have all their weapons.
Embiid is averaging 30.0 points in February. Harden is scoring 23.0 points and 10.5 assists per game since arriving in Philly. Tobias Harris and Tyrese Maxey are both averaging north of 17 points per game. Georges Niang is shooting a shade under 40% on 3’s coming off the bench. He and Shake Milton combined to go 7-for-11 from deep the last game against the Cavs. Too many scorers to contain them all.
The Cavs have played the Sixers tough, losing by 10 and 6 points, but that was with Jarrett Allen guarding Embiid. Mobley doesn’t have the bulk to contain him and with Mobley on Embiid he won’t be available to guard one of the other Sixers' shooters, so it’s a ripple effect on the defense.
Last game the Cavs scored 71 points in the first half but the Sixers adjusted and held them to 48 in the second. Wade and Rondo did not play that game so the Cavs will have the same team except they lose Allen and gain LeVert. In order to keep this game interesting for as long as possible they’re going to have to score and score and score.
Last game they shot 53.7% overall and 35.7% on 3’s. They hit 21 of 24 free throws and put 119 points on the board. It’s going to take another offensive outburst like that to keep this one competitive because without their best defensive player I don’t see them holding Philly under 125 points, especially with the refs giving Embiid and Harden every break.
I wonder if we might see our new 7’2” center guarding Embiid?
In the last game against Philly Okoro had 22 points on 7-for-8 from the field. Whenever he had Maxey on him he bulled his way to the rim and Maxey could not stop him. Okoro is coming off a 20-point game against the Clippers so I’d like to see him stay aggressive tonight. The four games prior to that he scored a total of 28 points.
We could use a good game out of Cedi Osman. Talk about inconsistent. His last seven games he’s scored 9, 20, 17, 0, 8, 14, and 0. From night to night you never know if he’ll score 14-20 or 0. Last game JBB got frustrated and put in Windler for Cedi. Okoro is also inconsistant. Starting with the last Philly game he’s scored 22, 2, 11, 9, 6, and 20. I’d like to be able to count on both of them for 12-18 points per game, but it’s like they’re either on or off and rarely in between.
