The Cavs return home for the second of a back-to-back series against the Bulls. After a thrilling 103-102 win in Chicago Saturday the Cavs are 2-0 against the Bulls.

Saturday’s win was not pretty. The Cavs allowed the Bulls to steal the ball 15 times and had 21 turnovers. They went 12-for-19 from the foul line. They committed seven turnovers in the 4th quarter while trying to protect a lead and scored two points in the last 4:56. During that span they went 1-for-5 with four turnovers. As Kevin Love said, they did everything they could to lose, but won “ugly”.

They were saved by excellent defense. Zach LaVine was held to 15 points after scoring 43 on Detroit the night before and the Bulls only managed 102 points.

That being said, anytime you beat an NBA team on the road without Mobley, Garland, Rubio, and Wade and with Donovan Mitchell going 5-for-16 with seven turnovers it’s a really good win. Especially against a team that came in having won five of their last six.

Now the battle shifts to Cleveland where the Cavs are 16-4. The Bulls are 7-11 on the road. I don’t know if Garland or Mobley will be able to go. Garland is listed as “doubtful” so I assume he’s out; Mobley is “questionable”. Since the Cavs beat the Bulls in Chicago without either of them and now they’re at home, I expect they sit Mobley to give his sore ankle two more days of rest.

The Bulls rank 29th in opponents’ 3-point percentage and in two games the Cavs are hitting 44.6% from deep. Love is 10-for-17 on 3’s and Cedi is 5-for-9. Those two are combining for 31 points per game against Chicago. The Cavs need to continue to take advantage of the Bulls’ weak perimeter defense, especially with Garland and Mobley out.

Caris LeVert also likes playing the Bulls - he’s averaging 18.5 points, 6 assists, and 5.5 rebounds against them.

The Bulls allow an average of 9.5 offensive rebounds per game but the Cavs had 15 Saturday despite Mobley being out. The Cavs outscored the Bulls in second chance points by an unbelievable 25-2 which was huge in a one-point win. You can bet the Bulls will emphasize not letting that happen this time around.

To go 3-0 against the Bulls the Cavaliers need to continue their hot shooting from deep and continue getting offensive boards and second chance points. They need to keep getting positive contributions from the bench, especially if Mobley and Garland can’t go. Okoro, Lopez, and Neto were +2, +4, and +7 off the bench Saturday which was crucial in a one-point win.

The Bulls are 9th in forcing turnovers and they forced 21 on Saturday. They were lurking in the passing lanes and anticipating passes, jumping in for steals. The Bulls have a lot of 6’4” to 6’7” guys that are quick and gamble for steals, so the Cavs have to be more aware and not overpass. Mitchell in particular needs to cut down on the turnovers. In two games the Cavs have committed 37 turnovers against the opportunistic Bulls.

If the Cavs cut down on the turnovers, do a better job at the free throw line while, continue to play solid team defense, make a high percentage of their 3’s, and get offensive boards they should get another W.

The Cavs did a nice job on DeRozan in the first two games, holding him to 10-for-26 from the field and 17 points per game. Zach LaVine is averaging 19 points so the Cavs are containing the damage on him as well. However, by focusing on the Bulls’ top scorers the Cavs allowed Dosunmu and Javonte Green to combine for 31 points Saturday on 11-for-15 from the field. They need to be careful about overplaying the big guns and getting burned by the supporting cast.

First game of 2023 - let's start the New Year off right.

I thought we had about a 40% chance of winning on the road without Garland and Mobley and we beat that--barely. LeVert especially came up with a great game, as did Love.

At home, if Mobley plays, which I expect, I have us a 60% chance of winning, pretty comfortably, say 121-109.

Without Mobley, I'll put us at 52%, say 114-111. I am assuming Donovan returns to form and score 30+ with better than 50% efficiency.

We can still lose this game if we don't solve our turnover problem or if no one can shoot from 3.

I'd like to see the Cavs power it to the rim more instead of those close-quarter, interior passes that the Bulls stole a few times on Saturday. My impression is the Bulls really follow the ball into the paint on dribble penetration and go for the steal, leaving open shooters on the perimeter. That would explain why they rank second worst in opponents' 3-point percentage but are 9th in forcing turnovers. They prioritize collapsing into the paint when the ball goes there. They're a smaller team that needs to get takeaways.

An inside-outside game where the Cavs dump it inside to Allen or Mobley to suck in the defense followed by a kick-out for an open 3 might be really effective.

If Mobley plays he'll be guarded by a 6'6" or 6'7" guy since Vucevic will be on Allen.

Javonte Green is listed as a game time decision. He scored 12 points in 16 minutes against the Cavs on Saturday, going 4-for-5. He also blocked two shots. If he can't go that would be significant.

Also, the CBSSports injury report does not list Mobley so I assume he will play. That would be great because he's perfect for contesting DeRo's mid-range jumpers.

The Cavs had 15 offensive rebounds and outscored the Bulls 25-2 on second chance points without Mobley on Saturday. Getting him back would give the Cavs even more offensive rebounding firepower.

I am not sure he and Allen are better rebounders than Love/Allen though.

You can see how even though I don't want Love to start how much he added to the SL with his spacing and rebounding.

I'd really like to see Jared Allen make a shot outside 5ft. He seems to be missing a lot of hooks this year

Hopefully Spida breaks out of this mini slump. He has fallen off a cliff lately. Hopefully its not fatigue or injury related. Sometimes I think with his athelticism and craftiness that he should be getting to the line when his shot is off.

That's asking a lot man. I'm usually sitting right on the commode. :chuckle:
He’s 7 ft tall so with a small foot stool and a proper squat he may be able to do it. The post never said it had to be done horizontally. A vertical 5 foot drop would work …hopefully the splashback isn’t too gnarly.

Allen losing the ball and missing his normally money shots is confusing. I need 10% more toughness

Mobley attended shoot around. Ankle is still a bit stiff. They’re protecting the franchise. Gonna let his ankle get to 100% and no less. I’d expect him back very soon.

Garland is gonna miss about 10-14 days worth of time, IMO. But he could have needed surgery. Thankfully the UCL is in tact. That would have stunk.

I look forward to all the analysis of of our offensive system based on the flow of tonight’s game with no Garland, Mobley, Rubio, and Wade!

I can’t understand for the life of me why we don’t run continual motion offense aimed at getting wide open 3s for LeVert, Stevens, and Okoro. (yes I know, motion offensive can lead to other things, but when those are your wings and 2 of your offensive studs are out, the defense will collapse on and focus on everything else so that the majority of pass options are to those wings who are simply not good 3P shooters.

Even when we are fully healthy, if we ever are, our offense this season based on the current roster is not best suited for the type of control motion that so many here both clamor for and use as a basis for judgement on what good offensive scheme is.

Premeptively dickish,

MirO
