Game Thread | Game #46 | Cavs @ Grizzlies | Jan. 18, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It was the same refs making those pivotal calls against us. It’s unprofessional but I’m convinced these refs hate JBB and it’s why we never get those momentum changing calls our way
I mean if the theory is that complaining too much results in the officials calling it the other way, Ja Morant shouldn't get a call for the remainder of his career.

I’m not saying it’s right but he bitches all game and not even in a tactful way just our rights yells and insults them to where the camera even catches it. You can even see the visibly annoyed faces of said refs

Rubio should be drawing up the fucking plays.

Tremendous game by the Cavs but the little things killed them. Like only making 14 of 21 free throws. Like Mobley stepping on the baseline after getting a rebound or Garland getting called for a travel on an inbound pass. Or a 5-second violation in the final minute.

The Cavs have to be the worst I've ever seen at inbounding the ball, especially from under their own basket. They screwed up two of them tonight.

Garland tried to play hero at the end as usual. First he missed a contested 3-pointer, then he got a layup attempt blocked out of bounds (setting up the 5-second violation) and then he got the final shot blocked going one-on-one. With the Cavs down by one point we didn't need him forcing up a 3-pointer against a 6'7" guy. We needed dribble penetration with a pass to a big.

But overall it was a tremendous game by Mobley (18/15/3 with 2 blocks and stellar defense), LeVert (23/4/6), and Okoro (17 points on 6 shots and 4-for-4 on 3's). Garland had a nice final line (24/5/14) but he tried to do it all himself on the last couple of possessions and came up empty, going 0-for-3.

Love and Osman once again gave us nothing. Wade can't get back fast enough. Love's thumb is clearly not OK as he went 1-for-5 from deep, all uncontested. He also missed an uncontested baseline 12-footer.

Santi Aldama came off the bench to score 16 points in 20 minutes - double his average. The 6'11" second year player hit 4-for-6 from deep and 6-for-8 overall. I thought he was the difference. He and Bane combined to go 9-for-14 on 3's, the rest of the team was 2-for-20.

The other thing that lost the game was allowing Memphis to go on a 20-0 run in the second quarter. It featured four turnovers by the Cavs and two missed free throws by Allen. I knew at the time that giving up a 20-0 run would cost them a win, and it did.

Almost stole a win on the road against the #2 ranked team and easily could have but for bad free throw shooting and three inexcusable turnovers.

I think JBB should be have been fired long ago but we all know the refs are not changing that call if he challenges. Was it a bad call? Yes. Would they change it? No.

Pretty crucial to lose a timeout there. Oh wait, he didn’t even use the timeout he saved. Let the 5 second call happen and the desperation of that last possession happen.

I’m not even bothered by losses when Okoro and Mobley show signs of development. If the loss makes a JBB firing more likely, good.

Yes and it's why, ultimately, you have to bite the bullet and trade some of the guys people don't want to trade.

It's way harder than just "getting them to play like this when Mitchell plays." They largely can't. LeVert in particular in this instance because it's not how he plays.

You've gotta move some high usage players for some low usage ones who effect the game by spreading the floor and rebounding the ball.

I think it's clear that Mitchell, Garland, LeVert will never work well on the floor together - and that LeVert is better when one of the two don't play at all, let alone both on the floor with him.

The benefit of a LeVert is that if either Garland or Mitchell are hurt, he is a solid replacement. But I'd move him for someone more 1-dimensional, if possible.

Suppose I didn’t even need to check to see if Garland shit himself in the crunch again - that’s a given.

Garland's my favorite player, but that last possession was on him. We didn't need a three to win. He forced it, we lost, and hopefully he learns from it.
He’s been choking all year, with no signs of learning from his mistakes. I would hold my breath. We’re over 40 games in.

We’re going to end up underperforming our talent because of JBB
With JBB, we will always be at least a year away. We won’t be contenders until we get our Steve Kerr. Which may never happen.

I like that JB pulled Love and Cedi. They killed us in the first half. I feel like he called Neto's number at the perfect time too.
This is the one thing I will give JB credit for doing. They both went into the doghouse and didn't come back, and Neto sub for Garland was a great move while Ricky was still in.

Was about to come out the game with full praise, until....

JBB has cost this team a handful of games already this season. Great coaches get teams to win a few games they have no business winning, not cost teams a few games they’d otherwise win.
He’s cost the team more than a HANDFUL of games…
