Game Thread | Game #46 | Cavs @ Grizzlies | Jan. 18, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is the one thing I will give JB credit for doing. They both went into the doghouse and didn't come back, and Neto sub for Garland was a great move while Ricky was still in.

Was about to come out the game with full praise, until....
I thought he was crazy for even trying Neto+Rubio. It worked great for 2 possessions then he got Rubio out before it turned into a disaster. I don't think that combo can work.

Garland tried to play hero at the end as usual. First he missed a contested 3-pointer, then he got a layup attempt blocked out of bounds (setting up the 5-second violation) and then he got the final shot blocked going one-on-one. With the Cavs down by one point we didn't need him forcing up a 3-pointer against a 6'7" guy. We needed dribble penetration with a pass to a big.
I came in here to say exactly this. On what planet is it considered smart to just completely abandon what has been working all game long in favor of hero Iso ball that is easily defended? Stupid as fuck and I'm tired of it. Otherwise nice game by Garland, ruined by this.

It was pretty clear to me that JBB did not have a play drawn up on the Cavs last two possessions! Especially on the last possession where we didn’t call a time out. The worst thing the Cavs could have done (which they did) was keep the ball up top with no penetration towards the hoop (with Grizz did on their last possession). Garland dancing back and forth around screens was ridiculous! That’s on coaching. DG should have been pushing the ball (not walking it) down court and attacking the paint to create a look (possibly a foul) for himself or a pass inside after the Grizz collapse on him. HELL NO NOT JBB’S STYLE :(

He’s been choking all year, with no signs of learning from his mistakes. I would hold my breath. We’re over 40 games in.
I don't know how to respond to this other than to say it's simply not true?

The Boston game stands out as an obvious counter-example, and that was the most impressive win of the season because the Celtics really wanted that game. Tonight he didn't even have Mitchell on the floor with him.

There are legitimate criticisms of JBB, but this entire rant is absurd. He clearly called a play on the in-bound and we couldn't even get it in. Further, if you're up with that little time left, you shouldn't be pushing the ball. I don't blame him for not calling a timeout on the last play after a five second violation either.

We couldn’t get the ball in on a JBB inbound play? Feels like we’ve seen that a few times this season

Can any explain why that idiot didn't call a timeout. I know why because he doesn't know how to draw up a play
Because the previous timeout inbound play worked so well?

You mean call another timeout when you can’t get the ball in play within five seconds.
If they had a timeout JBB should have called it at four seconds. But in that case the play needs to be a lob to Allen just to get the ball in and start the offense from there. A five-second violation is inexcusable in that situation.

Another option is for the player inbounding (Okoro) to count in his head and call time when he gets to four seconds if he doesn't have a pass.

Inbounding from the baseline is hard so they needed Mobley or Allen coming to the ball off a screen. Apparently they were trying to get it to Garland but he was being fronted.

After sleeping on it I'm tremendously encouraged that the Cavs came within one point of knocking off a team that is 19-3 at home, had won 10 in a row, was completely healthy, and had the previous day off despite the Cavs missing two starters (Mitchell and Wade) and with Love and Cedi being complete non-contributors at the moment.

Just need Love to make one of the five wide open shots he missed or some better free throw shooting. And not committing two turnovers on inbound passes. That is something they really need to work on. It's an ongoing problem.

But if the Cavs played at this level every game they would win 95% of the time.

This loss we will be remembered for long time , we will learn from it.
. Grizzly Were Clowning us.
Mobley got punched in the mouth and didn’t drop. He will remember
okoro. Coming out party
Ricky. Will open up the offense that is needed in playoffs.

Pretty sure Garland missed both Boston games.

Garland’s late-game collapses started on the first West Coast trip, and they continue unabated.

I am 100% convinced this team has a lower ceiling with JBB as coach than it should, unfortunately I cant see Koby getting rid of hi until the team underperforms end of next season
Totally agree. Something isn't quite right, and I've come to the same conclusion as you have. We have way too much talent, should be winning these games at this point. I know Rubio needs more time and Love is bad right now, AND we need 2 shooters and a big, but I see zero improvement from coaching standpoint.

How you don't call a timeout there... JBB is absolute trash.
Team is operating at a handicap, bc the head coach is solely a motivator, and not an Xs and Os guy. It’s the difference between a top-4 playoff seed and a first-round exit. But JBB will get all the excuses he needs to stick around.
