Game Thread | Game #74 | Cavs @ Nets | March 21, 2023 | NBA-TV

Then , that’s a statistic which has a poor correlation coefficient for rebounding performance. Looking at our 7 games in March, we‘ve been outrebounded in 6 of them, by margins of 49-34, 46-33, 40-30, 43-40, 46-34 and 37-32 (Nets, Sixers, Hornets [twice] and Heat [twice]. The only game that we had more rebounds than our opponent was against the Wizards.
The stat is for the entire season and I was responding to the comment that defensive rebounding has been an issue the entire year.

Defensive rebound percentage is simply the percent of rebounds collected by the defensive team.

Total rebounds is impacted by the absolute number of rebounds on one side of the floor vs another. Since defensive rebound percentage is far higher than offensive a game with more rebounds on one side (due to free throw or other differences) can distort evaluation of rebounding performance.

But in the six games cited where we were outrebounded based on total rebounds we did win four of them.
Defensively we challenge the perimeter and help out more than most teams and have the #1 defensive rating (which includes defensive rebounding performance) so there will be games where we give up offensive rebounds, like last night.

I do t think we should change our defensive sets just to improve rebounding. If that's so important we should have played Kevin Love. Think his help on defensive rebounding is worth suffering his other defensive shortcomings?

Has anyone noticed how bad Claxton is at defending the pick and roll? Gives up a wide open 3 every time because he drops so low. Will be unplayable in a series.
Good point. Claxton was a -33 last night. They brought in Sharpe and he was a +27. Night and day.

Just because they are poorly correlated doesn't mean it isn't a useful stat. The percentage of rebounds is more important, IMO. If the other team doesn't miss very many shots, we aren't going to get many defensive rebounds. In a few of those games we forced a lot of turnovers, which means there was no defensive rebound to be gotten on that possession.

The Sixers beat us in large part, though, because they turned a lot of their offensive rebounds into 3-point buckets (at least 4, I think).

Probably been said in this thread, but my goodness are Ian Eagle and Richard Jefferson an awesome combination. Watched the NBAtv feed last night, and hope to get that feed again tomorrow night.

And YES network's production >>>>> Bally's.

We need to play a complete game. We allowed the lead to dictate our emotions. We allowed a big play to dictate our emotions instead of doing the job and finishing the game the way we need to finish the game. - JBB after the game

Sounds like he's saying that after the Mitchell dunk the Cavs figured the game was over. The Cavs are the worst of the top four teams in the East by far in "crunch time". They need to get better at closing out wins.
I've grown weary of these kind of comments from JBB. OK, you've analyzed the obvious problem - just like everyone else watching the game. Are you doing anything to actually address it?

He addressed it with the media. I'd say there's a high probability he addressed it with the team.

I'm not sure what else there was to do. Athletes sometimes get cocky when they have a bid lead. Not sure anyone has the cure for that.

YES is possibly the only feed I'd watch instead of the home team, they occasionally have Mike Breen over there.

Cavs haven't scored for more than 1100 minutes. Just thought everyone would like to know.

Wasn't in the thread last night, but I felt obligated to make one of my usual insightful contributions.

Well, well--two Cavs make the NBA top ten plays list--or is it just one?
