Game Thread | Game #78 | Knicks @ Cavs | March 31, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Batman???? Mitchell was a disaster defensively and a to machine in the 4th.
He dropped 42. Find someone else to complain about. Without his heroics we get blown out. He needed help (on offense and d) and didn't get it down the stretch. Again, find someone else to blame.

Even if Garland hits 2-3 of his 4th quarter shots and Mitchell turns it over less, my guess we are still edged. Maybe, they should have lived and died by Stevens, but that was JB's choice.

The Cavs really missed Allen as they were outrebounded 48-33 and outscored in the paint 54-46. The Knicks had 16 offensive rebounds to the Cavs' 3. The Knicks are 2nd in the NBA in offensive rebound percentage and with Allen out they had little difficulty getting second chances. But Randle was also out so it was even.

You have to hand it to Brunson with a career high 48 points plus 9 assists. Nobody else on the Knicks had more than 14 points. The Cavs handled him in the first three games, holding him to a 15 ppg average. But he was ready to go tonight. Neto was the only guy who slowed him down a little.

Maybe with Allen back they can put Mobley on him if Randle is still out.

I really think the difference was the benches. The four Knicks bench players were all between +11 and +18. All the Cavs bench players were negative except Cedi at +2. Quickley, Hart, and Hartenstein are better than Wade, Rubio, Cedi, Lopez, and Neto. Huge advantage for the Knicks. The Cavs' starters are going to have to play 40+ minutes in the playoffs. They might have to go with the starting five plus LeVert and Osman.

Not having Allen meant JBB had to use Lopez, and he was a -8 in 7 minutes, while Hartenstein was a +15 with 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. He dominated in the paint.

Nice to see Garland, LeVert, and Cedi all play well. Their numbers were awful against the Knicks so far.

The Knicks are shooting 35.1% on 3's this year but they hit 47% tonight. You can't beat them when they make 17 from deep. That's 52 points when you include the 4-pointer.

Well, the Knicks were looking to make a statement and they did. It's hard to see the Cavs beating them if Randle is back. He's their best player.

That first half was astonishing. We were expecting a low scoring, grind-it-out half court affair like two of the previous games, but the Cavs came out with a franchise record 47-point quarter (and still lost the game). The Knicks, who rank 13th in scoring and missing their leading scorer, put 79 points on the Cavs by halftime. I never would have believed that was possible against the #1 scoring defense in the league, but with Allen out they are a far cry from that.

The Cavs only trailed by 3 at the end of the 3rd, but started the 4th with a really bad lineup of Mitchell, Neto, Cedi, Wade, and Lopez. That 3-point lead quickly became 9 in the first three minutes and then 15. It was obvious their bench was much better.

Wasted game hammering on the starters playing 40 minutes in a meaningless game.

This was really a frustrating loss that really has me questioning how easy the Knicks will be. Both teams missing guys, but they just played smarter, harder, tougher. Cavs did look tired. Give guys rest these last games and let’s get ready for the playoffs.

Yep

4-1 Knicks

It’s hard for JB to coach a single game, let alone multiple games where adjustments need to be made
I’m back to thinking that a first-round sweep might be the best outcome, if it motivates Koby to get a next-level coach.

wtf

The Knicks will be a very tough matchup. Too physical for the Cavs.
I thought we matched up well against them. Let Randle shoot all day and complain with teammates and be physical with Brunson. But they punked us at home without their all star.

This game means next to nothing. Out 3 starters between them, this is hardly a preview of the series to come. Biggest disappointment for me was JBB still played DM and Mobley 40+ and LeVert & Garland 37+. There was no reason for it and we lost anyway (one caveat - DM really didn’t compete on defense so his minutes weren’t all that difficult). Mobley kind of disappeared (or was frozen out of the offense). We will obviously need him to be assertive in a couple of weeks. I was pleased to see Wade get minutes and compete better. For a guy who hasn’t played a lot of meaningful minutes in a couple of months, I thought he looked decent. A healthy and “right” Wade is still a better option than Stevens and I haven’t given up hope that JBB will get him reintegrated. I was glad to see Neto get some minutes, but I wish it would have been double what he got. I guess Green is going to be nothing but a bench coach.

Koby needs to worry about getting current-level bench players more than the coach. "Lucked" into LeVert, but this team can't tank the way it does w/o JA and Okoro. I'm sitting here watching every damn team (except maybe Portland because they are pseudo-tanking and ATL because they are the definition of mid) eat off deadline acquisitions that I wanted to see on the Cavs. From Hachimura to Luke Kennard.

The only thing I need to see from JB is somehow instilling how to defend a team with multiple threats to shoot and off-ball movement. The Cavs will have 50 wins this season with a team that barely makes sense on paper. But playing defense the way this team does, not only as a result of their own effort, but the critical absence of key players is going to ensure playoff disappointment. The Grizzlies built a bench and survived without 2 of their key players down the stretch for the most part.

In the 4th quarter:
- DG was an embarrassment. He made a lot of dumb decisions and froze out Mitchell towards the end
- Stevens was an embarrassment. 3 layup opportunities = one fumble + 2 blocked shots
- Stevens + Mitchell defense on Brunson was an embarrassment. Terrible communication on defense, giving up 2 open 3s and a drive to a guy that was already torching them

Koby isn't the GM anymore I'm afraid. He can't just step into Gansey's space, tell him what deals to make, and how to do his job.
