The last night is an indy game being helmed by Tim Soret. A lot of people were getting really excited over the last night until they found out the the lead designer is a gamers gate supporter. Now all of a sudden everybody want's to boycott it because he is some sort of scum for supporting gamers gate. The only comments I can dig up for him on twitter are very docile, so I don't understand the rage. I think because gamersgate got it's start from a female developer being harasses that everybody assumes that people supporting gamers gate are misogynistic assholes that are okay with women being harassed.

Gamergaters from what I gather are about preserving journalist integrity. The female developer where gamers gate began apparently started when she was outed by an ex boyfriend for cheating on him with journalist who then wrote positive things about her game. So, they're not okay with the harassment, but also not okay with journalistic integrity in the industry.

Either way, I can separate art from politics and this isn't the first time i've heard of people boycotting an actor, artist, ect. because of their politics. I've heard people o nthe right boycotting Tim Robins movies because he's a hardcore liberal.

It's something I don't understand. If somebody makes a product I enjoy, or starts in a film that entertains me, then I don't care if their beliefs differ from mine.

I'd be interested to hear from @Rich because he's into the gaming scene and social one here. Ditto with @gourimoko and @Jack Brickman . Pretty much the usual suspects. @David. plays metal gear solid, so he counts too.

Ty, FWIW; Gamergate was such a non-scandal (the journalistic aspect to it) to me that it's ridiculous... There's a fervent vile air of misogyny that floats around people who got sucked up by the hype of Gamergate and a lot of YouTubers and pseudo-journalist/bloggers (see Milo) literally made a career off this one lame story.

Honestly, I can't take anyone seriously that talks about "journalistic integrity" in game magazines.. :chuckle: I mean, c'mon...

Anyway.. with that out of the way; no I won't be buying this game, although I'll certainly promote it's piracy. I do find the comments of the lead dev to be ridiculous, but not particularly offensive in anyway. But if this game is supposed to be about some kind of "progressive future" run amok, well, I'll be sure to upload it to my seedbox so that as many people can play it for free as possible.. :chuckle:

p.s.
To give you a more serious answer; I don't boycott people for their political views. I would boycott someone who I thought was rabidly anti-feminist or an alt-righter though. I do think there is a qualitative threshold where it goes from just an ideological difference about policies to how we value fellow human beings. If I think a person is someone who has questionable ethics, then no, I won't buy products from that person (or corporation).

For example, I haven't eaten at a Chick-Fil-A in I dunno how long.. it's been years; and I know the food is good. I'd rather burn the money or give it to charity than buy from a company that is openly against same-sex marriage. And yes, I realize companies will still do just fine without my business -- and that's great -- let them do just fine.. without my being part of it. ;)

From what I've read, the game is about the future of mankind after damn near everything has been automated and people define themselves by what they consume rather than what they create. It sounds like it has evolved past his original concept for it and is actually pretty interesting now.

So you're advocating theft essentially because you disagree with his political stance?

So you're advocating theft essentially because you disagree with his political stance?

Theft?

1.) I don't consider software piracy as theft. We can have this conversation if you like; but please keep in mind I own a software development company, I'm a software developer, and I've also been in the FOSS/hacking/piracy community (for lack of a better term) since I was a kid. My views on this come from a lifetime of experience dealing with the topic, and I've come to the conclusion that the modern concept of software-based IP law is untenable and needs revision. I realize many (most) people would disagree, but I'm more than willing to debate the point.

2.) See my edit where I added clarification. It has nothing to do with "political stances." I wouldn't advocate boycotting someone because they were a conservative or a Republican (I honestly think that'd be terrible). The question is one of ethics. If you're asking me would I boycott someone over a political difference, then no, I wouldn't. But would I boycott someone I thought had objectionable ethics? Yes, I would.

I think in this day and age, folks like to lump everything under the sun as merely "political differences," when that term really doesn't do the gulf between ideologies justice.

For example, if the person were a fascist; I would boycott their products and hope they fail. If you consider that a problem, well, I'm not sure why? Why would I give my money to someone I find objectionable?

Sounds awesome, and can't wait to play it! :)

And you would buy it if he didn't have those old comments?

It's not just the comments, FWIW... But given what he's said, I would hestitate to rush out and buy the game if it was essentially a propaganda tool.

But .. if I didn't suspect that it was made with such intent, then probably yes, I would buy it; it looks like the kind of game I love to play...

With that said though, I'd point out that I have two different steam profiles with games on them; so, it's not like I don't buy software. I often buy multiple copies of games so that my nephews can play.

I like the way you put this, that someone you were against ethically rather than politically. I can think you are wrong as a conservative, but if you are a white supremacist you aren't just wrong you are vile. So many people are claiming that others don't tolerate their viewpoint politically, but it is the morality of not caring about others, and even outright hating them that is unacceptable. That is not a political discrimination, it is moral/ethical one.

What did he say though that was inflammatory? That really crossed the line between you being willing to pay for the software and instead pirate the software?

I don't think this developer has said anything that makes him this misogynistic dick that would be comparable to an alt righter being a white supremacist. He said he isn't for feminism because he's for egalitarianism. I don't see anything wrong with those comments.

BTW, saying you're against feminism and for egalitarianism isn't really much of an argument. It's juxtaposing two words without really discussing what the terms mean. It's nice to say you're an egalitarian, that's great... But do you really understand feminism?

So for me, for him to say that modern feminism is somehow dangerous and should "lose" and also discussing "extreme progressivism," I find that a bit ridiculous..

I wish he would have expanded on his comments. Is he talking feminism wins like reverse handmaiden tales situation? That sounds really interesting. When you just say feminism won it sounds like he could be saying he doesn't want women to have equal pay, rape issues, reproductive rights ect. I could see where people could take issue. Really we need him to address what he means by feminism winning out.
