Getting Rid of Cable- What am I missing?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I am with YTTV until either 1) they realize I split it with 2 other people and thus we only pay ~14 each or 2)the cost to me specifically goes over 40$ (aka if they don't catch me, $120 a month)

Kinda sucks since I thought you were locked in at whatever price you signed up with.

Not a huge deal for me since I was on the $45 plan. But if this is gonna be a yearly hike I might get edged out soon.

YouTube tv has never had a $45 plan. Your bill was probably ~$45 because of taxes and fees so now you will be ~$55.

The grandfathered $35 plan was keeping me from looking around. It was hard to beat that value and I didn't want to lose the discount. Now at $50, they are now more than Hulu live and the same price as Vue and DirecTV now. Vue has NFL Network and the option to add redzone. DirecTV now has HBO in their $50 package. Getting normal Hulu for free with Hulu live will be a perk that gets me to go to Hulu live for a couple months a year.

I will also be looking at Sling and adding a OTA DVR of some sort. Like 90% of my DVR is network tv. I can live with on demand or watch live for the cable shows I watch.

Hulu's interface is so shitty, though.

I pay $190 a month for Dish Network 250 channels, Top Speed Windstream internet and a home phone. It's just too much. I don't watch enough TV and I usually only watch a few channels anyway. I also have a NetFlix account so that's another $10 putting me at $200 a month.

I was at Best Buy tonight asking about Roku and the staff was somewhat helpful but I wanted some real customer feedback. If you have gotten rid of cable let me know what's great and what really sucks.

So assuming I get the Roku 3 and a HD antenna for local channels (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, etc) what else do I need?

I will keep the Netflix account and I assume I'll add on Hulu for $10 a month. Should I get Sling TV for $20 a month? Amazon Prime seems like a no brainer too. Anything else I need to have that I should pay for? HBO would be a consideration even though I don't have it now.

What about sports? Specifically Cavs games. Can I watch those? NFL network is not available on this or do I have to buy a package?

Buffering and video quality- how are they? Is this just too much of a hassle still? Should I stick with cable?

If you live in the Cleveland area go with Hulu Live. You get Indians, Cavs, and more sports channels then your cable tv already probably has for $40 a month.

I don’t find it that hard to use.
Fair enough, I hate it. Compared to YTTV, especially, where all my favorite channels can we put in order and it has a legit guide.

Cutting the cord used to be cheaper, but it really isn't anymore. I liked Sling when it was 20 bucks, but it isn't anymore. The thing that really sucks is that internet only is really expensive now, when I used to get it for 30 dollars.

The problem is the tv networks only want to sell channels as packages then people start complaining that certain channels are missing that they would like. So all the cord cutting streaming tv providers just keep getting more and more bloated just like cable.

I really thought YouTube tv made the mistake of adding this additional round of channel instead of creating a new package or service all together. I bet they will see their user base shrink or stall like how Vue and DirecTV has recently. It was a surprise YouTube tv forced it into their core package, Viacom and Discovery seem willing to be added to Philo and ATT's watchtv since they have been shut out of some of the other streaming services. YouTube tv could have easily made another package or service to get that subscriber base and pull people from Philo and Watchtv.

I thought YouTube tv was going to be the one to keep its price low. I thought google was using YouTube tv to figure out how to micro target customers with ads on the tv platform. It's something that they have done well with banner ads and in searches but I don't think the industry has figured it out for video especially in tv. They would have had a leg up on the industry and it would be a gold mind once they figured it out.

I also think they were trying to use YouTube tv as the launching pad for YouTube premium/red. They gave it free to subscribers to get the word out to hopefully build a subscriber base for YouTube premium to compete with Netflix, Amazon video, and Hulu. I just don't think they ever had the show or group of shows for people to buzz about. I watched actually a bunch of the youtube premium shows and I never felt it was enough that I could recommend to my friends to spend 7.99 a month on.

Does anyone else feel that the market is over saturated now?

For sure especially for streaming services. We really didn't need more than Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. Disney plus might succeed but all these other services like DC universe, Shudder, CBS All Access, youtube premium, etc are bound to fail or consolidate. We got spoiled with the amount of content Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu were able to provide us. These newer ones just don't give enough content even if they are only $4-8 a month.

As for cable streaming services, I dont think there are enough yet or enough to provide an impact. Maybe after the fox regional sports deal is completed to whoever gets it, that will shake up the services to give us less bloated packages. It doesn't seem like a major network had bid on it so if new service come out in the future they won't have to add some of the extra networks that they once had to to get the fox regional networks.

I am getting a 1tb usb drive for about 60 bucks so ill be able to record (I would prefer not to pay 5 dollars a month for 50 hours of recording through their cloud service)

so far 100 bucks for the airtv (Android TV) player (got 50 dollars off of sling TV) and Adapter
25 bucks a month for Sling TV Blue ( no espn but access to regional sports programming)
The antenna was 5 bucks from amazon.
I have Netflix,Amazon and WWE network which I would have with or without cable.

the box includes kodi . so far the amazon app sideloaded hasn't been working . I haven't tried putting In the Amazan kodi add on as of yet. ( kodi runs like crap and I don't think its the boxes fault the playon addon was unusable but I could chromecast from PC with no issues)

I do have the option of disabiling the airTV EPG and using the google live EPG instead with full DVR recording options but this feature is in beta on the slingtv App.

it also has a large font setting that allows the channel options to look bigger if people have problems seeing them.

The control is simple and intuitive. you can access a mini channel guide while watching a show or go to the full screen guide .

so far not a single complaint from the Woman who s not technically inclined and can use it easily.

OTA Channel Lineup with full EPG
NBC
Ion
Escape
MeTV
Laff
Antenna
ABC
Heroes and Icons
CBS
CW
Charge
Comet
overall 22 channels which isn't too bad considering I live in a rural area.

Sling Blue Channel Line up VS Orange
https://www.groundedreason.com/sling-tv-review-watch-live-tv-online/

Main differences between the two is the the blue offers the FX ,NBA and FS! regional lineups whereas the orange offers ESPN and Disney channels.

When OSU bowl game was on ESPN . I added orange for a week and dropped it later.

during the playoffs . I had other game sources for the espn but those aren't reliable and may not be there the next espn event I want to watch

I have DSL internet and playing a MMORPG and have seen no noticeable skipps or play issues with the sling channels at this time. Of course I got a Draytek Modem and a Trendnet AC router,

I have a plug in wired connection but I haven't had to use it because the WIFI has been just fine.

Whats really nice is YouTube Live and playstation Vue both work on the box. so your not stuck with just slingtv as a subscription service option.

I didn't test Hulu . why Hulu Live wasn't set up to work within Android TV and their approach to live streaming has me baffled. still at the very least I can chromecast to the box if I decided to go that option somewhere down the line. (Netflix might be taking a similar route)

so as of right now. im getting integrated OTa and internet cable EPG with my most of my favorite apps ( Damn you and your licensing AMC) for
SlingTV 25 dollars
Netflix 10.99
WWE network 10.00
Amazon Prime 8.25

for around 54.25 a month

DSL Internet is 99 per month with 2 lines

not many internet options where I Live.

Which airtv model do you have? I'm debating getting one so I can switch from YouTube tv and jump around to different streaming services based on what sports are in season. I want an airtv so I don't have to set up a cloud DVR everytime I switch services. 90% of my shows I record are network tv.

I've seen the white airtv models go for cheap on ebay. It has mix reviews and some say they can't record two programs at a time.

I really want an Amazon recast with 4 tuners but I can't justify $230 if it's going to be obsolete in a year or two because of ATSC 3.0. I know I'll have to buy an atsc 3.0 tuner for my 4k tv so hopefully a new recast will come out at the same as ATSC 3.0 tuners.

Saw this a couple of month ago but it looks like at some point in the near future hulu is getting a guide and if the picture of it I found is correct it looks like "My Channels" would take care of the favorite channels problem that you were talking about.
