Quite frankly, he wasn't worth nearly a max contract. Anyone who saw his game as much as I did, realized that outside of a decent mid-range jump shot, he brought nothing else to the table. Poor defensively, poor passer, inadequate ballhandling ....he simply doesn't have anything resembling a complete game. For the record, the only guy out in the free agent market that does have that is JJ. If we offer the max to any player, it should be the player that deserves it, first and foremost. Don't really know why we wasted any time at all on Redd. Just get the max offer to JJ, and then try and work some form of sign and trade with Phoenix that might entice them not to match. We'd have known four days from today, at the latest, whether we had him or not. Then move on to the other players that have qualites we need. Both Hughes and Simmons offer more complete games than Redd ...I watched them this past season because I know they're on the radar screen.
Lebron can play either SF or Guard ....given that, I think Simmons is the guy I'd go after, if we don't have a shot at JJ. He's plain and simple a very very hard worker at his game, and it's shown in his continued improvement from year to year. He's always been a hardnosed defender ...strong, aggressive ...but what really surprised me this past season is how vastly improved he became offensively. Both with his mid-range and three point shooting. Never, ever thought he'd develop that. He doesn't have the quick release that Redd has ...but with us he'll have the open looks. I just think he has the game that will develop the most in our system, with our players and set up. Plus, you'll be able to have more money to use in other areas. With Z coming in at 10 million, Simmons at 7.5 ...that would leave us another 11 million for other guys. Let's grab Daniels for 5, Donyell Marshall for 4, and then have 2 million and a possible trade of Gooden to get a more rugged power forward. That would be a team that could compete and have quality young depth. Thoughts ?

We knew that redd was not worth the max, but we really needed that "decent " mid range shot , and his 3 pt shot. but yeah im really glad he passed on us as well, becuase a max contract for redd isnt what i wanted ... now just pray we get JJ or Hughes

how does it go with offering the deal to JJ ?

i know they have 7 days to match, but is that after the inital offer,(if we offered it today) or 7 days after the signing period begins starting the 21st ?

The Cavs couldn't sign Johnson to an offer sheet until either July 22 or 23 so a final decision by Phoenix on if they'll match might not come until July 30.
A wait for the Cavs wouldn't hurt them at that point since Johnson would be the best FA left and the Cavs would still have money available to make other moves even with having money tied up with the Johnson offer.
