A gun thread. I had not seen a recent thread.

I need advice: Which is preferred? HK P2000 or the HK P30 in .40?

What's the purpose? (Not prying for reasoning, just trying to match the right tool to the job)
Is there a particular reason your options are only between two HK models, just partial to the brand?

Also, you're in Cali, right? I'm not really sure how that screws w/ any recommendations that are made. They have some unique laws that complicate matters as well.

Depends on what your intended use for it is.

This going to be a primary CCW gun?

This will give you the basic differences in size.

I don't think you're really going to go wrong with either option, but I'd probably go with the P30 over the p2000.

Are you set on HK?

I ask because the SIG Sauer P226 has a .40 variant. If it's good enough to be used as the sidearm of choice by the Navy Seals, that's good enough for me.

I'm not a big fan of shooting .40. I don't like the upward snap they do. I'm more of a .45 guy, but there's pro's and con's. Cali law locks you into 10 round magazine max, so I'd rather those rounds be heavier for more stopping power if we're talking a self defense gun.

I think we could better give you a view if we knew what the plan is for the gun. If you plan to go to the range/shoot more I am a fan of 9MM just for the cost of ammo. Plus with 9MM you can get some pretty good ammunition for home defense. But I am not a huge fan of handguns, I enjoy going and shooting shotguns or rifles a lot more. I grew up shooting clay pigions and still enjoy doing that.

IMO you should just buy both, never can have enough. :chuckle:

I assume you mean both in .40, right? Anyway, of those two choices, I'd go withthe P30. Been awhile, but I recall liking the magazine release and sights better. Didn't get it because of the cost, and because it isn't ambidextrous and I'm a lefty. Also a matter of personal taste, I dislike the paddle style releases period. But the P30's was better than the H2000. My biggest takeaway from the H2000 was how frustrating the magazine release was. The P30's grip also was a lot more aggressive, and if it fits your hand well, that's a huge plus. But that varies from person to person so it's hard to make a recommendation on that basis for someone else.

I'm a huge fan of the Walther PPQ M2, and they make it in .40 in addition to 9mm and .45. Absolutely beautiful trigger pull. And you'd probably save about $250. But it's striker fired rather than hammer fired, so it that's part of your preference, it's out.

I own a Sig 9mm. Haven’t fired it in a while. Bought it in 2014 a bit after I got shot. I’d like to buy more at some point, though. Went through a phase where I was trying new guns out every other week and taking mine to the range, I’d like to get back to that. But I’m far from an enthusiast so doubt I’ll be much help on your question.

My old man is in the market for one, I’ll have to help him find something though.

This is a new sidearm for home self-defense. CC permits here are very hard to get.

I have a Glock 23 in that role but I may hand that off to my partner.

Sigs are nice, but I am in an HK phase.

I want a compact, in .40. I am used to .40, like it, like the balance of the round.

I have a 9mm, but also I am not enthralled with them from my time in Army. The 9mm has a mixed reputation in the military due to its inability to put down the enemy, who are often hopped up, and this has caused issues.

I dunno -- I've got a bunch of different 9mm's and .380's that were gifted to me, and I need to move some of them at some point. I just don't shoot most of them and they just sit in the safe.

I'm assuming where you are it's hard to get a rifle. What about a shot gun?

I have a battle rifle, hunting rifle and a good shotgun as well.

Just looking for a new pistol as I am bored with Glocks.
