Adam Silver is pushing this in season tournament. Can somebody explain to me what the purpose is ( besides lining the league’s already deep pockets) of the tournament?

The NBA has been trying to steal the energy of March Madness for years but don't know how. They don't want to make the regular season meaningless through ending the season on a one game lose-and-go-home tourney. They considered options to start the year and during the All Star weekend. This has become their best shot at weaving the concept in.

-make money
-highly competitive mid season primetime games
-create new mid season storylines and potentially enhance some postseason storylines( playoff rematch of one of the midseason tourney matchups)

but mostly money.

Personally, I’m not super for or against it until we see if it actually happens, what the format is, and then how it plays out over a couple of seasons.

What’s at stake from a fan POV? Players are winning a milly apiece, which...great for them. But why do fans care?

Playin is obvious. Win or go home type of deal. The tourney seems meaningless. Maybe fans of winning teams win a chalupa?

So I understand this.....this mid season tourney does nothing to influence the final standings or playoff positions? Ugh what happens if a LBJ, Curry, Joker, etc goes down in this mid season tourney? That ruins team’s title chances

Stupid

The NBA has a worldwide influence and I think they are trying something from football/soccer with these other tournaments.

Unfortunately, unlike in soccer, there is no real fan incentive in this case.

I think it would be fun. I think there is more variance in a single or even double elimination compared to a 7 game series. Like if the Cavs knock off the Nets or something.

The minor midseason tournaments in soccer don’t draw well either (I.e. English League Cup). Fans aren’t stupid. Even the #1 tournament in club soccer - the FA Cup - doesn’t have the interest or prestige it once had. The interest is in the major clubs, either in their national leagues or in the Champions League, and even those are plagued by mismatches (which is why the larger teams wanted to form an exclusive league).

The players in the better teams barely care about the regular season. Why would they care about a midseason tournament?
