Isaac Okoro - Thanks for the "defensories"

What do you think about the new contract?

  • Best move of the offseason

  • Okoro is a quality signing at a decent price

  • Better than over paying for some else's under performing free agent

  • He might be a useful piece in a trade some day

  • It will take some luck to make this worthwhile

Okoro could respond phenomenally well to a change in leadership. Unless there's a sell-high option out there, I'm definitely erring on the side of wait and see, because it seems like a low risk, moderate reward kind of thing.

Offensively he just needs confidence (to shoot threes) and scheme (because he is somewhat limited in skillset). Both could be unlocked with coaching. Kenny is known for offense and off ball action and back cuts, right? Something Okoro could excel at because I do think he is smart and can identify when to cut, and obviously his athleticism helps finish it off.

Defensively his biggest opportunity is rebounding, which is also partially scheme-driven, though yes there is no evidence that even with a different scheme he would be a better rebounder.

Well, we're counting on Atkinson to change some of the focus of certain players on the offensive end, right? So if the issue is less Okoro 's ability to shoot than his willingness to pull the trigger, that seems like the kind of thing for which a new coach could have a positive impact.

What makes me nervous about trading Okoro is that for all guards we have on this team, Okoro is really the only one who is a defense-first guy. I'd feel better about trading him if we'd drafted differently, or acquired Herb Jones, etc..

If, and I say if, Okoro and Levert for cam johnson and finney smith works for me. I guess it would be a sign and trade in okoro's case
Levert is a nice expiring for a rebuilding team

Would that entice the nets or could they get more dealing those two in separate deals

Also move Garland for a taller defense minded 2 guard. Also utilize strus at the 2

Bring Allen back for another year. Trade him next off season for whatever the needs are there. I think allen could bring back a lot. I just see how Mobley develops this year

This is my concern as well. He is a defense-first guy and he seems to get substantially better at it during playoffs.

Our offense was practically neutral with him these playoffs but it's clear we are better defensively with him.

Offensively he has improved his 3pt percentage every year in the league. 39% this year with career attempts per min.

A different coach with a new scheme maybe just what's needed. We get him to 6-7 attempts per game he becomes that true 3&D guy.
 
I think we all agree that we want Okoro to be a Cav4Life and the Cavs & Okoro probably are dialed in with us fans with that line of thinking…

Therefore I’m not all that concerned with the negotiations and this one can really lay on the back burner until some other things get sorted out…

When you have a guy like him you can throw on the best scorer. The thing about him not being able to guard bigger guys had mostly not been true for more than a year.

You have to think he could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of Kenny Atkinson. I hope Kenny sees him playmaking from dribble hand offs, but all that tape was from early last year

It wouldn't surprise if Okoro took a leap forward in Kenny's system. One of my biggest griefs with JBB is not letting players play to their strengths. Okoro is super athletic and is probably one of the fastest on the team, why are we parking him in the corner for a full 24 secs?
