Isaiah Hartenstein: wowing people in Vegas

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He's not great, but I don't know what other options the Cavs are looking at these days. I can imagine that the Cavs were hopeful about Kabengele as a potential stretch 5, but he did his absolute best to quash those hopes in summer league. Really feels like we're an Allen injury away from total chaos in the frontcourt. Hartenstein could at least step in and limit the damage in a scenario like that.

I think as the roster stands and what is out there on the free agent market, the Cavs might be better off just waiting till rosters are cut to see what they can get. What other teams will cut to make their 15 man roster is probably better than the 12-15th players on the Cavs roster. Having the MLE will allow them to outbid teams to give the players they like more than vets minimum.

Backup center should be something they can pick up after roster cuts. Of the positions of need it might be the easiest of the 3 to find someone. With the MLE basically getting the team to the luxury tax line, I wouldn't want to limit the teams flexibility to go after some more pressing areas of need with the MLE.

If it's so easy to find a backup center, let's hear some ideas!

Most teams don't keep 3 deep at center anymore for their 15 man roster but if you look at the 20 man rosters of teams, they all seem to have 3 or 4 deep at center at the moment. The Cavs are one of the few that don't have 3 deep at center. I'll be honest that I'm not familiar with all the players that would fall in this kind of category but really we are talking about a 5th or 6th big man so they would be pretty much a no name player.

I think we will be well position to go after whoever gets cut because there won't be much if any competition for centers when 15 man cuts happen. I think there will be alot of centers being cut but very few looking to pick one up.

Yeah, I mean, that's the issue; these are all no name players. Kabengele-type players. The difference between those guys and Hartenstein is pretty enormous, so it seems sensible to prioritize locking up Hartenstein...at which point we'd still only be 2 deep at center!

We don't know the reason why Hartenstein isn't signed though and he might not be willing to be a 5th or 6th big man who isn't guaranteed playing time. He might be slotted as our backup center but Nance, Love, and Wade will most likely get playing time over him. We pay him we lock ourselves into him on the 15 man roster and limit ourselves to what we can pay out on the MLE to not hit the luxury tax. I think Koby and the front office might have decided the flexibility is more worth it than the risk of the talent drop off from Hartenstein to another player.

I don't think they are actually just weighting the talent drop off at backup center. If wings get cut and we should want to pounce to get them. I could even see us being very interested in another scoring guard. Maybe we end up overpaying guys to secure them with part of the MLE.

Per a month-old article on FearTheSword, "According to sources, Hartenstein would like to come back to Cleveland. But, it does depend on what the Cavs do this offseason starting with the 2021 NBA Draft. If Cleveland takes Southern California big man Evan Mobley third-overall, Hartenstein is likely no longer a serious part of the team’s plans long term. Mobley will likely start at power forward for the Cavs, but, can soak up backup center minutes behind Jarrett Allen which was Hartenstein’s role last season".

As you have correctly pointed out - with Mobley, Allen, Love, and Nance (and Wade!) taking the big-man minutes, Hart will not see the floor much. But I think if he is still unsigned at the start of the regular season, the Cavs might be able to bring him back.

The priority remains a young wing, though. We might be able to get a Cam, or Kyle, or Dillon, and then sort out the back-up center position.

As for a third PG, was Kevin Pangos just noise, or, are we getting him?

Mobley isnt going to get very much if any time at the 5 with his Brad Sellers type body. Dont see that as a factor in Hartensteins decision. It seems that Cavz want Cam Reddish pretty bad. He was always considered a great shooter in High School but didnt show it in college or in Atlanta except in small sample size in the playoffs. Cavz may feel they can fix him. Going in to his third year Cam may be ready for a break out year. Atlanta wants Cavz first rounder obviously . The FO may be comparing Cam to some of the wings in next years draft to determine if He has better upside than those coming out next year.

Oh, man, you just sent shivers down my spine with that Brad Sellers comparison…yikes!

I think the Cavs would love to have Reddish, but there’s a big difference between what they’re willing to surrender and what the Hawks want for him. In the end, I think Reddish stays put and provides good insurance for Hunter.

I realized one other reason why they might not given an offer to Hartenstein yet. The cavs still have a 4.2 million dollar trade exception so they would be waiting for training camp and 15 man roster cuts to work themselves out. We just got to wait and see which teams need to move off some player because someone out played them or they need to get rid of their salary for cap purposes. We got McGee last year in the same fashion.

ok, but if he didnt show it in college or in the nba yet why go for him. Will he not be getting closer to a new contract ? I do not see him being much better than cedi at this point. They both have a ton to prove. But we are already paying osman so why take a flyer on reddish when we have to give up a player or assets

I was thinking about this. Why is it more likely Cam Reddish hits 38% from 3 when he has never done it as opposed to Cedi who did it 2 years ago but reworked his shot and had a really down year?

If you really had faith in Reddish's defense I could see it. I'm not convinced of his motor. I'd be really interested in what they want for him because he isn't very good. He had a good game in the playoffs, but so did Rodney Hood. lol

Even Terance Mann had a random 39-point playoff game. Pretty much anyone can look great for 1 game...it's that kinda league.

Yup, just like Boobie (prayers up) getting 31pts against Detroit (if I remember correctly its the game that knocked them out of the playoffs)... Most of the players in the NBA are really good, but only a few can be consistent enough to do it day in and day out....

The jump between leagues: HS/College/G-League/high end Euro/NBA is so vast from each step.. people have no idea until they actually play against someone who has been on some of those levels. I think the NBA more so than most of the other main team sports too.
