first thing they did was start shooting, that's not defending themselves.So there is no argument that they killed him, but the defense is that a private citizen can arm themselves to pursue someone they suspect of a crime, then "defend themselves" whilst attempting to apprehend said suspect?
Maybe we should designate certain individuals for that activity, and give them clear guidelines on how to behave. We could even make them identifiable to the general public so there is no confusion as to the purpose for their being confronted.
