Yao, McGrady among Western Conference All-Star voting leaders

December 15, 2005
NEW YORK (Ticker)
- Not even a disappointing start could keep Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady of the Houston Rockets from gaining accolades from NBA fans.

Yao is the leading vote-getter with 729,178 and McGrady leads all Western Conference forwards after the first returns of the 2006 NBA All-Star Balloting program, announced Thursday.

Through the program, fans from around the world are responsible for voting in the starters for the 55th NBA All-Star Game, which will be played in Houston on Sunday, February 19.

The Rockets (8-12) are in last place in the Southwest Conference due in part to a back injury that has forced McGrady to miss eight games. Yao is a three-time All-Star averaging a career-high 19.5 points and 9.10 rebounds and McGrady is averaging 24.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

A five-time All-Star, McGrady has garnered 600,507 votes and is followed by Minnesota's Kevin Garnett with 469,497. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers is the top vote-getter among Western Conference guards with 664,744 with reigning league Most Valuable Player Steve Nash second with 562,846.

Cleveland forward LeBron James :king: is the leader among Eastern Conference players with 665,849 votes, 19,764 more than Miami Heat center Shaquille O'Neal. Jermaine O'Neal of the Indiana Pacers is second among conference forwards with 387,893 votes.

Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers leads Eastern Conference guards with 638,999 votes and Miami's Dwayne Wade is second with 479,774. Iverson was voted the 2005 All-Star Game Most Valuable Player.

I will never look at Yao as a true all star... Or a leading vote getter....

Shut that voting off in China and see where he's at... ;) ... Yao is a joke..

Grant Hill is always at the top for some reason :chuckles:

The East look really strong, but whats with Duncan being over looked? C'mon get the fundamentals in there.

Its basically lebron leads all star votes. probably 1/10th of yaos votes come from america.

Stop the whinging about Yao. Its no different to you guys voting for Hill or Carter or Mourning and so on when they may be undeserving.

Who else in the West is deserving of the C vote?

Brad Miller... 1 - Best passing center... but nobody in Sac gets the love, cept for Peja.
Marcus Camby... 2 - Best defensive center... suprised he's not getting votes
Mehmet Okur... 3 - Best surprise center... nobody really likes the Turk...

Dampier? Pryzbi? Kaman???

Right.... Plus it's in Houston.

*EDIT*

I think i'm going to take that one back... I don't want it taken in the wrong context..

When there are few alternatives you have to vote Yao. So he will have more votes then the best player in the NBA if that player is up against fellow good and or popular players. Looking at the list of centers, Yao should get the votes he's getting.
