This is a pretty silly debate tbh, there are so many variables that talking about "8th man money" doesn't even make sense from the get go.

Like just think about it, there's no nice linear progression from the highest paid player on a team to the lowest except in rare circumstances. It might be better to talk about median instead of average but even that is going to be skewed. And a young guy who signed in 2021 with potential is going to be making different money than a ring chasing vet. Yeah you can go ahead and average them, have fun, but thats a pretty useless and non-informative thing to do

And there's what like five teams actually under the cap?
Also, @Randolphkeys said 7th or 8th guy in the rotation. Odd that some only want to focus on the 8th.

If I were to nitpick, I’d say it’s 6th or 7th man money, but that’s basically the same message Keys was trying to portray.

He’s the 81st ranked salary this year, and that rank will only get lower. For reference, in 15-16, Iman Shumpert was 83rd.

Interesting about Shumpert being 83rd and he was a bench player.

I dont think 6th or 8th makes a difference, either you are a high usage bench player or low usage bench player, and Lauri will be high usage bench and spot starter. I am guessing for any games Mobley or Allen miss, Lauri will start.

Other guys in that same range were:
Rajon Rondo - Sacramento
Omer Asik - New Orleans
Lance Stephenson - Memphis
Taj Gibson - Chicago
Ryan Anderson - New Orleans

Also, they were all making $8-9M/year.

And Omer Asik? Holy crap is Markkaden a ton better than Asik ever was.

Is Ramon Rondo the same guy as Rajon Rondo but during the regular season? :chuckle:
What about Tan Gibson? Golden skinned mfer looks like the GD Oscar Statue.

Wait, did we mashup Ramon Sessions with Rajon Rondo?

If you actually look at "8th man money", or the 8th highest paid player on each team, the average is probably like 6m. There are many reasons as to why that is.

I get that NBA salaries are going up and we should judge his contract not vs contracts today but contracts tomorrow...but it's a pretty high contract for an "8th man", it's probably a high contracts for a 6th man.

At no point did anyone argue that the contract should be the eighth highest on the team.

I don't even know what the argument is any more.

16m is a lot for the 8th man, it's a lot for a 6th man, and I would argue there is a moderate difference between 6th and 8th. I think even towards the end of his contract it will be a bit of an overpay.

(Shumpert was also an overpay)

The amount is an overpay but that is what small markets have to do. But it is not that high of a salary unless he isn't a starter , not with the way money is doled out in this era anyway. It is the going rate for a starting 5 with a little frosting nothing more. I mean if they don't start him in favor of Evan than JA is getting traded at the deadline imo
