The contract discussion has become a theater of the absurd.
1. The core of the team was drafted in the past four years and Dan Gilbert is not afraid of paying salary now that the luxury tax has reset. The Cavs are saving money short-term because rookie deals are cheap.
2. The point is that Lauri's contract in 2021 is the new going rate for a high end player off the bench. It's a contract one used to pay for a top 3 player on the roster, but the cap made a few huge jumps recently.
3. That price point was used as a measurement of Allen's contract, also signed in the same off-season. Allen is paid like a starter, but he isn't being paid like a star.
