(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
"Joe Woods needs to blitz more!"

Guess not...

Until Woods started sending more than 4, we were getting blocked every time like that first drive. By blitzing some and mixing up the stunts, it was harder to double Myles and Malik and know where the pressure was coming from.

You dont have to blitz allot but you have to mix up with some blitzing and some stunts, then when you play it normal 65% of the time, the pressure still gets through because they dont know where to line up a TE or have a back help on a double.

Like Woods and Myles said, the execution is what's changed from before.

The defensive line seemed like the team's biggest questionmark coming into the season--

After four games, the Browns rank second in the NFL in total defense, third in rush defense and fifth in pass defense. The 266 rushing yards are the fewest the team has ever allowed in the first four weeks of a season, and no Browns defense has held opponents to single-digit scores in consecutive games since 1995.
Those numbers are even more impressive considering how the Browns started the season. They allowed 33 points to the Chiefs in Week 1, 21 points to the Texans in Week 2 and appeared to be under-performing based on the goals the group had when it arrived in training camp with one of the most rejuvenated rosters in the NFL.
Now, the group is living up to the hype as one of the best defenses in the league. That's because the D-Line has throttled opposing linemen in trench battles for the last two weeks.

Watching an in-depth play-by-play breakdown of our defense against the Vikings... bro for real I'm nearly in tears. It's a thing of beauty. Wu is so incredible and his instincts are money. Troy Hill has low key been playing so well both in coverage and in stopping the run. The d-line is playing like they've been together for years.

This was NOT the defense we ran the first two weeks. Lots more communication, movement, stunts, disguises, etc.... It's just obvious that Woods was holding back, probably because he wanted more cohesion in his system. The Bears game was great but it was also us taking advantage of a terrible o-line and a rookie. The Vikings offense was hot, o-line okay, Kirk was hot, and we shut them down. 7 points. They got some good plays in but most of them were tough, contested catches. And it was done with terrific play-calling and execution at a level I've never seen for our defense.... ever.

Now that I KNOW Woods isn't incompetent, I can trust his gameplan and play-calling even during games when we struggle on that side of the ball.

Not trying to spam but I'm enjoying this. I just watched a play where Wu was supposed to blitz the edge, but the Vikings motioned Adam Thielen to the strong side, so Wu gestured at Ward (who was still on the weak side) and Ward blitzed the edge instead and hit Cousins while he was passing to an open Cook, leading to an incompletion.

Little stuff like that is what I'm seeing almost every defensive play.

We had one bad play that would've been a Vikings TD where KJ Osborn broke free, looked like MJ Stewart screwed up big time but Cousins saw it a little late and wasn't able to get the pass out there because of pressure by Garrett and Malik Jackson. Takk ended up getting the sack.

Who is he going to replace, especially if Walker is back?

I think that's your answer to the question. If he's good enough, he could replace a few guys. If he's not, which you seem to be implying, there's no room for him.

These incredible numbers over the past 2 weeks would have been even more incredible if Mayfield would have hit a wide open Beckham on the last drive. Browns would have been in kneel down mode. Vikings picked up about 50 yards on their last possession.

I'm wondering what happened to all the people who wanted Woods fired. Bueller?

Happy to share some.

Probably a good idea to remind ourselves that this is still a new defense with a lot of new players and them getting potentially ragdolled in the next two games against two White hot offensive juggernauts isn’t necessarily a reason two jump back In the panic room.
