(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Kevin Stefanski hired Joe Woods. That was his hand picked defensive coordinator. This heavy zone scheme is the defense that Kevin clearly wants to run.

As much as we don't like how the scheme seemingly does not match up with the current personnel, particularly in the defensive backfield, this is clearly what the head coach wants to run.

I would just be shocked if there was a midseason change at this point, and even if there was, the replacement would be someone promoted internally that would be running the same system.

Isn't it on both coaches to pick players that fit to the scheme correctly? Literally most of the starters were added in the off-season by these guys.

The issues with this defense are schematic and always have been.

My issue is that the scheme doesn't even necessarily need a total overhaul but let our guys get more aggressive at the line. Mix in a bit of man here and there with our CBs. I ike how he's schemed the front 4. Our LBs were shit today but for the most part have been pretty decent. It's literally just the secondary that have yet to look like they're on a rope for a single game all season. We have so much talent back there - it's inexcusable at this point.

Ask those guys what isn't working for them and make some adjustments. You don't need to throw out the fucking playbook.

Fuck this guy and his shitty ass defensive play calling

The Browns were third in the entire NFL in defense before injuries hit.

The offense committed three turnovers and nine penalties worth 88 yards lost. The Cardinals recovered all their own fumbles.

But simply being not healthy enough or playing well enough to beat the hottest team in the NFL doesn't appease a furious fan base.

???

The defense was missing...no one (?) today.

We can talk for hours about how awful the offense was, but the defense was awful as well.

There’s really no way to defend that defensive performance today. Woods was awful and so were the players.

Woods is only going to be able to live off that Bears game so long. There will eventually be enough season to overcome that outlier of a game.

All I need to know is that they have been absolutely torched by the 3 good teams they have played. They will win a lot of on paper match ups, but when they are actually on the field, this unit leaves a ton to be desired. Constant break downs, blown coverages and inability to generate turnovers.

Would you say the turnovers on offense led to easy scoring chances for the Cardinals?

I would.

The defense played poorly. I'm not saying otherwise. I am also watching the fan base want to trade OBJ, not resign multiple players, and fire coaches.

Might want to step off the ledge and ask what can be fixed, and if a wholesale change is needed.

Sure, but the Browns didn't stop them when they gave them the whole field to drive on today as well.

The Browns busted numerous coverages. Their defense didn't even come close to stopping the Cardinals. Even if all the turnovers ended up being punts, the Cardinals were putting up 30+.

That’s what I needed to see. Because I was seriously starting to wonder if you might be Joe Woods or something. :chuckle:

My only defense of Woods today is time and score have a lot of influence on the game.

We are playing a really good QB. With good weapons and a pretty good scheme.

The defense stiffened in the middle of the game and held them to FG’s and immediately got the ball back at the half.

The offense did jack shit with that middle of the game spot and the only reason it wasn’t a total tire fire was because we completed a 1 in 500 pass to score points.

I’m not even a huge Woods fan but once the offense repeatedly falls on its face, after the defense at least gave them a chance, the rest kind of doesn’t matter to me.

Everyone will reference the point total but the defense managed to give us a chance after a slow start and Baker trying to get traded by halftime and the offense didn’t do anything to help them flip the momentum and make their offense play with some more pressure.

Not really though because the Browns defense actually bowed up after both first half turnovers. The Cardinals went 3 and out and kicked field goals both times, so those turnovers only led to 6 points.

The Cardinals had five other scoring drives where they drove the ball at least 54 yards.

On the flip side, you could also say that the defense giving up big plays and going down 14-0 on long drives by the Cardinals deflated the offense and threw the gameplan into the water.

Giving up a 3rd and 19? A 3rd and 13? How many more? I’d love to know what the record is for being so terrible on 3rd and long. This has a historical kind of feeling to it and I’ve watched us since ‘99 . How many turnovers do we have for our defense on the in 6 games? Like 3?

The offense hurt the defense no doubt but the defense was terrible as well.

Gregg Williams D was able to scheme and generate turnovers. I feel we’re not utilizing our talent at best and we’re playing scared or even too loose. Unable to stop on 3rd and long for multiple times is really design and scheme. It’s not the players.
