(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm excited to see a lot of dime this season with that upper-echelon defensive backfield. I'm going to guess that no matter how healthy the Browns front office claims Delpit and Greedy are for the season, they will still have a snap count limit if everyone else is healthy. Wear and tear is hard enough on a first year pro, but coming back from serious injury puts them in even greater risk.

There are some drawbacks to the dime, especially against a strong run blocking team. The Browns are going to value a player with very good change of direction and quickness that gives the defender the skills needed to cover a quick slot receiver. He's also going to need the speed to carry a receiver downfield. That's where Greedy can get extra reps if Newsome and Ward are both 100%. Delpit and Greedy both had some missed tackles at LSU - so limited snaps when everyone is healthy is definitely a luxury.

Both nickel and dime backs need to have the ability to blitz and sometimes the dime back is going to be more of a hybrid safety/linebacker type. That's where I could see JOK getting reps as second linebacker but playing much more like a dime.

Luckily, Harrison, Johnson and JOK should all be excellent against the run. I'm also excited for shit tons of dime, and getting our talent on the field.

I'm hoping for a little bit of luck in terms of health, and then also a little bit of development to really flesh out our depth and allow our DC to run whatever scheme he wants to match up with the offense.

When you can run 6 DB's on the field to match up with Lamar, solid two-high coverage looks to match up with KC, and bring six men along the line of scrimmage to attack Derrick Henry, that's what I'm looking for.

Depending on how JOK works out and how the classify a defense, not sure we technically play allot of dime if Jok is the 6th DB. I think we see JOK lined up allot over TE's split out, not sure that will qualify as a Dime even though if JOK was a safety they would call it a dime,

But its only technicalities, but i expect more nickel now that we JOK.

Now is JOK a hybrid? Or is JOK a LB who because of his athletic profile can do some things that a Safety or Corner can do also? I say he is a pure LB with the ability to cover in the slot. I dont think you will ever see JOK outside of the box in a true safety position. I know I am splitting hairs, but what else do we have to talk about, lol.

We will certainly play significantly more nickel than dime.

I am excited for our dime looks--specifically those with JOK as the only linebacker on the field.

I count JOK as a linebacker.

I agree ok JOK being 100% a LB, not a hybrid, but before we drafted JOK, i thought woods would slip into some old defensive habits because of the depth of the secondary. Not saying its a bad thing at all, but in the past he played more dime the nickel, but its all about personnel.

It all depends on how quickly JOK adapts to the NFL. Notre Dame kept a very straight-forward scheme that didn't change things up from play to play often. In the NFL, the offense and defense are constantly trying to trick or disguise what they want to accomplish.

I see Walker as the guy who will be the constant at linebacker. The coaches have been quoted saying he can play all three linebacker positions. That means Malcolm Smith will likely be the veteran weakside linebacker JOKer needs to take snaps away from. There's no question who is physically superior... the last step is mental. It's important to note all those young linebackers had every opportunity to take Smith's snaps last season, they just couldn't do it because of the mental part of the game.

I 100% agree. I do see Walker being on the field 75%+ of the time. And i think JOK takes snaps from Smith, I think the one you are sleeping on is Phillips. I think he really came on last year and a year in a pro workout program and in person training is going to make him even better. I have Smith 4th in snaps at LB behind Phillips/JOK...a year older for Phillips is good, a year older for Malcolm is bad.

I liked Phillips, and I love the fact that he is the only guy with prototype size. I see him as a player who will take snaps from TakiTaki as the third linebacker, the run-stopper who also has to drop into coverage in play-action. I'm not high on Taki because of his limitations, but PFF confirms the coaches love for him against the run. It's just his shitty zone coverage that can give Phillips an edge along with just being bigger and stronger.

I only stop short because I wrote the exact same thing last summer. It didn't really happen. So if Taki and Smith are placeholders in June, let's see JOKer and Phillips take the job away soundly.

Walker over BJ Goodson should be a home run. Goodson over-achieved last season, especially in pass coverage. He was still isolated and victimized by Andy Reid in the playoffs. Walker has become a steady pass defender, but he lacks the length Phillips is naturally blessed with, and the dirty secret about Walker is missed tackles. He has some Joe Schobert in him. Who knows... someday it could be Phillips and JOKer full time in the nickel, but I think Walker is in his prime and set in stone for 2021.

Can't we just line him up 30 yards deep like Gregg Williams used to do with Jabrill Peppers?

:D:D:D

I really dont appreciate you using that language. As a Moderator I would expect you refrain in the future from dropping a Gregg W bomb on this forum again.

To be fair, Gregg is an elite Tank Coordinator. The media just doesn't know how to analyze precise tankometry in the 24/7 news cycle.

Hurl it's 2021 now just FYI so this article means heading into this coming season.
Yes. I wanted a comparison from the end of the year's position group to the current one.

Here's an article with quotes from Joe Woods, valuing quickness and lighter linebackers.

I'm feeling confident TakiTaki 's destiny is short yardage specialist and special teams contributor.
