(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Billings can improve his conditioning, but he's a nose tackle, not a men's underwear model.

Here are some other recent players who played that position for the Browns.

I am lazy and will just ask: did the above DTs effectively chase Lamar or Mahomes?

Thanks for the insight, Peyton StrawManning! Have a fine night!
I mean, you asked if the DT's effectively chased Lamar Jackson.

No DT in the NFL can chase down Lamar Jackson.

It's not a straw man when you're the one who posed the scenario.

What purpose does the question serve?

It's like me asking if your infant can beat up Terry Crews. The answer is no.

There's a lot of situations where you want a big fat interior lineman who can stay put and stop the o-line from surging forward. It's not every situation. But 3rd and short? 4th and inches? You want to put a big strong guy in the center of the D-line. Doesn't matter if he can't catch Mahomes in the open field. He just needs to keep the offense from taking the shortest path to a first down. I remember the Browns had trouble stopping 3rd and short last year. Browns needed an immovable object on defense and by all accounts, Billings looks pretty immovable. I'm not writing Billing off for 2021. He just needs to work on his wind, so that he doesn't have to hit the oxygen just to get on and off the field.

I am sure with the way Billings eats, he breaks allot of wind already.

Feels like we have discussed this topic before, but it's a good read:

Can Joe Woods’ Browns defense follow the 49ers’ Super Bowl blueprint?

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Joe Woods, the Browns’ defensive coordinator, spent one season as the 49ers’ defensive backs coach, but his experience there has led to repeated questions since his arrival in Cleveland.

That 2019 season for Woods and the 49ers, of course, was noteworthy because of the team’s run to Super Bowl LIV. So it’s natural for folks to wonder how – or if – the Browns compare to that 49ers defense.

That recently led to Woods being asked if this year’s defensive line reminds him of the 49ers’ group from 2019.

“When I was in San Francisco, we went through the season so you can see the results of it because we played 19 games,” Woods said. “We have not played a game yet, and on paper, it all looks good, but it is all about what you do between the white lines. In terms of the comparison, you can see we have ability, but it is all going to be based on how we perform if we are similar to that unit.”

Click the link for the specifics, but I agree with Scott Patsko on his stat-based findings.

This is the first time since I've been alive, or at least old enough to form long term memories, where if the ball breaks our way a couple times we could be in the Super Bowl.

I think it will come down to whether our coaches do a good enough job with the young roster to get them to understand what positions to be in to catch those breaks that can go either way. I believe in Berry with roster and culture building, and I believe in Stefanski and Callahan, but I'm still unsure about the rest of the staff and that's especially true for the defense and Joe Woods.

I haven't liked what I've seen from him so far, but I also understand he wasn't really working with a whole lot. The fact that really smart people like Berry and Stefanski chose him to run the defense is good enough for me to be optimistic for the season, but it's cautious optimism.

The defense got thier genie wishes this year. If the secondary does not improve we can question Woods ability.. but I think the defense got better just about everywhere..
