(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm still trying to figure out how an NFL Defense can let Mike Williams get completely free behind the secondary not once but TWICE.

Not sure who to blame for that, but that's next level bad.

The blown coverages are simply due to our players not being familiar and working on a string. I think that'll come within the next several weeks, bye week, etc. We can only get better.

But.

Joe Woods. You can't lose this fucking game when your offense hands you 42 points. Baker has 3 losses when scoring 42 plus. The only QB to ever hold the feat. I feel sorry for the guy. And its Joe Woods fault that he didn't have these guys in position to succeed. We can talk about Ward out, Newsome out, Greedy dinged up, Clowney out, but bottom line, 42 points wasn't enough for Joe Woods, and that's a big fucking problem.

This has to be the game they learn from. And if it's not... cut ties with Woods.

Defense has to be better but these injuries have been extremely problematic and untimely. Not sure who are corners would be if Greedy, AJ, and Troy Hill couldn't keep playing through injuries.

In the conversation about scheme or execution for coverage issues last Sunday, this is very relevant:

Due to several changes in personnel, the back half had a terrible game. Malcolm Smith was also removed as playcaller with JJ3 sharing the role with Walker. This is a seismic shift.

I think it's important that for the first time JJ3 was given the green dot helmet. The execution problems led to change, but we are talking about both starting cornerbacks knocked out.

I tend to lean on health as the biggest factor, changes in playcaller second. Unfortunately a 5th corner forced into a larger role is hard to scheme around.

Game isn’t over.

But given their injuries it’s impressive what their defense is doing to Herbert right now.

I can't take this team seriously anymore if they continue moving forward with this asshole. That 1st drive shows you enough.

Too much talent on defense for this to be the final product

Being so consistently bad on 3rd down is a coaching issue.

You can point to the individuals involved as to why we keep blowing coverages. Seems like Denzel is involved in a lot, Harrison had an egregious one today, every one has had their fair share really. But at the end of the day it’s almost been a season and a half and we still get torched for those unbelievably bad blown coverages more than anyone else. That part is definitely on Woods. Either he can’t teach his zone schemes properly or he needs to shift to a man heavy scheme, neither of which he’s done.

Still sucks. I was smitten for a minute with the Vikings game.

How many backbreaking TDs are we going to give up on defensive breakdowns in the secondary this year?!? Pretty sure that's the third in two games.

Kevin Stefanski hired Joe Woods. That was his hand picked defensive coordinator. This heavy zone scheme is the defense that Kevin clearly wants to run.

As much as we don't like how the scheme seemingly does not match up with the current personnel, particularly in the defensive backfield, this is clearly what the head coach wants to run.

I would just be shocked if there was a midseason change at this point, and even if there was, the replacement would be someone promoted internally that would be running the same system.
