Josh Gordon Relapse 2018

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't have a dog in this fight, but Gordon does has a bad history..

"Gordon describes growing up poor and being thrown out of two middle schools for stealing electronics from students. He says he began his longstanding relationship with weed in the seventh grade, and added in Xanax in eighth grade. He was thrown out of his first high school as a sophomore, and at his new school, he joined the Six Deuce Harvard Park Brim Bloods, a satellite of the infamous L.A. gang.

During one of the many gang fights that broke out on the weekends, he took a bullet in his left arm during his junior year. He claims that he never "maliciously" shot anyone, but often had to fire his gun to escape trouble.

He admitted to selling drugs, "mostly weed" and dealing in counterfeit money. He says he and his partners stole cars almost every day. He says he committed armed robbery on numerous occasions to steal electronics.

Gordon said he smoked week every day in high school and drank vodka in class. He started drinking "lean'' every night as a junior, and was always game for an offer of Xanax, hydrocodone or oxycodone.

Five days after his 17th birthday, he was arrested for felony credit credit card theft and spent more than a month in jail. He landed at Baylor because he was on probation and had to live in Texas.

While there, he says he received up to six pounds of weed through the U.S. Mail every week that he'd sell around Texas for a $10,000 monthly profit."

Does that qualify as "thug" behavior? I'd say so.. But, people can change as they get older. Hopefully Gordon can do whatever he needs to do to get back on the right path.

I think most of these stories were greatly exaggerated. There was a time when Gordon's handlers were looking to straight up cash in on selling his redemption story and needed to make the path back sound as awful as possible.

We keep the 5th round pick but the Pats get a 7th round pick from us.

Just an update. This is actually false. The Patriots do not get a 7th rounder in the deal.

Josh had to be active for 10 games for that extra pick to expire. He was active for 11.

The Patriots do get a 7th rounder from the Browns.

The original deal was Browns get a 5th, Patriots get a 7th IF Gordon is inactive for 10 games.

As I understand it, Belichick got pissed about the deal leaking slightly early and basically told Dorsey he wasn't going to do the deal and the two sides eventually changed the deal to the Patriots getting a 7th no matter what.

Completely forgot about that! There aren't many articles out other than the ones that came out right away with the original terms; I stand corrected.

I think it's sad that Gordon couldn't stay sober but it's also sad that the NFL drug policy basically ended this dude's career.

He talks about being drunk and/or high for games yet he put up numbers in the process. If the drug policy wasn't in place, would a team think twice about bring Gordon in? I think alot of teams would be fine if he was producing on the field. By all accounts he seems like someone you would put into the category of a functioning alcoholic/drug addict. I highly doubt banning Gordon from the NFL does anything positive for his life.

You need to lose stuff that hurts to get you off drugs sometimes

Really don't know enough details of what he's doing and everyone responds differently tho

I'm living in a state that is very progressive with legalization laws, but there is a huge difference between being permissive of illicit substances off of work hours and use during work hours. Any workplace is opening themselves up for serious litigation turning a blind eye.

Look how many former stars of the WWE ended their lives prematurely when the organization let them do basically whatever they wanted. Performers who are wasted while performing a high risk sport are going to get their lives cut short one way or another.

That's true. With him admitting that he did it while on the job, he kind of screwed himself. I do think the NFL needs a better policy of rehab vs just straight suspension/banning a player. Players should be able to enter rehab without consequences and I think rehab should be an option for players instead of suspension.

Yeah, there's a big difference between getting high off the clock and getting high then going into work. Doesn't matter whether or not you can do your job high.

Marijuana should be legal. Businesses should be allowed to decide their own policies on recreational drug use on the job.

If you perform well at your job while high, I wouldn't mind one bit if you did it while working for me. It's different if you need to represent my hypothetical company to clients or operate anything that could be dangerous if mis-handled.

So to answer the apparent question of whether athletes should be allowed to get high while working... I'd probably tsk tsk it but let it go if they could play like Gordon, but he has other issues to go along with the weed.

If I were the XFL or some other league in need of star power, I'd let him puff on the sideline.
