Magic stretched Timofey Mozgov and waived him. I thought Magic were a good team to flip JR too. Wonder if we really just handed JR and extra 500k for the sake of giving him 500k.
The Cavs blew it by not trading JR either during the draft or in the days preceding free agency. His contract just doesn’t have much value anymore. They overplayed their hand, when in reality, there were teams with cap space and/or trade exceptions that could make the same or better deals, with the teams looking to clear salary.

I can guarantee you Sam Presti would’ve gotten something of value for JR Smith’s contract
If they are really high with Porter, it maybe just more prudent to pay 5M plus the 2nds, rather than getting a longer contract and paying luxury tax... At the end of the day, they probably just could not find a deal where they feel it is worthed to pay the luxury tax plus the longer guaranteed money...Most rumors leading up to the draft had the Cavaliers acquiring a pick in the 15 to 20 range for JRs contract. We got the 30th pick with the player they were targeting all along for 4 2nds 1 of which will never convey and cash. If we don't find a trade and just waive him how did we lose? We got out of the Lux Tax for the upcoming season. If the asset he can bring in doesn't outweigh getting out of tax why make a move just to make a move?

We don’t know where Porter was ranked on the Cavs draft board. By your reasoning, the Cavs are out 3 second round picks by doing the deal the way they did.
Yeah who cares about 3 second round picks?
Just because the Cavs have whiffed on the second round picks for the last 10+ years doesn't mean they are not valuable.
NBA draft: 10 best second-round picks of the last decade
Golden State's Draymond Green, Boston's Isaiah Thomas, the L.A. Clippers' DeAndre Jordan and Memphis' Marc Gasol are among the NBA's best players. They also fell to the second round of the NBA draft.www.cleveland.com
In hindsight, very disappointed how the draft night trade went down in 2012. Cavs could have had drafted Draymond Green and Khris Middleton instead of Tyler Zeller.
That’s right. Every year there are some bargains found in the second round of the draft.Just because the Cavs have whiffed on the second round picks for the last 10+ years doesn't mean they are not valuable.

You don't want to have to buy second round picks. If you aquire them though trades , make the most out of them.I never said 2nds don't have value. But they can be bought every year. If you can acquire a pick and draft someone you want and the cost is 4 2nds (Only 3 will convey) and cash you do it.

Teams are always willing to sell them.
