You still clear 20M in cap space for the following two seasons doing that deal.

It is almost impossible to find a deal to trade Love. If you find one that saves 20M per year and open up some cap flexibility for the next few summers, you jump on it.

You’re not going to find a deal for Love that involves only expiring contracts without having to throw in sweetener picks to the team trading for him.
I hope you realize the cavs are in a position of advantage here. We are not just dumping love's contract, it is a position of need for some contending teams in need of another experienced star. I don't want a multi-year contract coming back unless it's for a young player that fits the timeline and roster.

Are you talking about the same Kevin Love that no one has offered a decent 1st for in years and who has played 1 game this season? He has very little trade value around the league at his salary and every offseason and trade deadline this backed up. It’s also backed up by the National writers, local beat writer, and insiders here.

We would be so lucky as to get a deal like Johnson and Powell that saves 20M in cap space while clearing a roster space for a player who can actually suit up over the next two years.

Good luck finding anyone that thinks the Cavs are in a position of advantage in dealing Love. I don’t mean that as a slam or gotcha towards you, it’s just the fools hard reality of the intersection of the player, his contract, and his health.

We may not be at an advantage but we have had several teams all season long inquire about trading for Love (Raptors, Dallas, Blazers, Nuggets, and Philly)! So don’t act like there aren’t teams out there that still feel Love still has “game”! It’s all about his contract and what Koby wants or doesn’t want in return!

You sure all those teams want Kevin Love at $30M?

Shooting and rebounding always have value. How much value obviously varies from team to team and year to year... but what we need him to do on the court is different from what some other teams need from him.

So it seems a bit silly to think that nobody would be willing to pick up his tab for a little while and have him as an expiring in his last year.

Feel free to dismiss this as being too reasonable.

For a little while????

He's still got 60 million coming after this year.

A lot of teams have an interest in Love, then that little thought about paying someone 60 million who has not played more than 60 regular season games since he was 27 and he will be 33 at the start of next season makes them back off. On an expiring deal someone would give it a shot, but any team taking on Love's deal basically kisses away any chance for themselves to sign a meaningful free agent for the next 2 off seasons. The only way they move him will be if they take on an equally ridiculous deal, such as last year I suggested a Love for John Wall or a Love for Gordon Hayward as the only way we could move him. They've been trying to move him since the ink on his contract dried, doesn't that tell you something??

When is the last time he did *anything* but wave a towel and cheerlead? $75ish MILLION is a lot to pay to have a "superfan" courtside...

This isn’t 2K. You can’t turn injuries off.

again, my problem with powell is he doesn't clear a roster space as he's a multi-year contract. i am not expecting a 1st round pick, again, what i said - we just need a young player, decent contract, fits timeline and roster. powell isn't that.

i have no argument with what you've said about kevin love, i'm just saying powell shouldn't be the profile we should be getting back.

Yeah but you’re giving up Love who has 2 more years of 30 mil per year, for a guy who has 2 more years at 11 mil per year. That gives us so much more flexibility. Love is constantly injured, doesn’t fit our timeline, it’s been well known around the league he’s available for trade and nobody has offered anything of worth. If we get an offer like that I’d move him before he gets older and further injuries decrease his value. Powell’s contract is also very friendly and easy to move in the future

No what we need is for someone to take the 30M a year for the next 3 years off our books. You’re not getting a young piece for the future of this team.

let's see what altman does. drummond deserves to be taken off the books, klove returns something, not just expirings.

As a thought exercise: pretend you're the Dallas GM (or the GM of whatever potential destination team you can think of). What "something" would you be willing to give up for a 32-year old power forward with a lengthy injury history (and who has played only two games this season because of what is apparently the mother of all calf injuries), and who will be getting ~$30 million per year for the next two seasons after this one?

You need to think of it a little different:
I'm the Dallas GM and I don't want to waste Luka and Zingas here, I feel like a I need another piece, and I'm staring at a 4 game series with Anthony Davis in the middle, so I'm going to need a big to at least threaten him that he may have to defend. My options are limited, so I start convincing myself that Kevin Love is an All Star F who was stashed when healthy by a team looking for lottery tickets, and who doesn't want to waste his time in a rebuilding situation, so he's kind of dogging it. I figure I have this year and next before I need to re-tool around Luka, and Love seems like the closest thing to the ability to add a 3rd star.
See, I'm convincing my GM-self I need Love.. even though you and I know the truth is closer to your picture.
