I hope the owner knows he fucked up by giving Mr. Talc that extension. It feels like this team won't fully move forward until he's off this team.

I agree with the above post. How can we be mad at Love?

It's our front office's fault for offering him a ridiculous contract that even 99% of posters on here knew was entirely too much / too long... Of course he sucks now. Does he even want to play?

The only unfortunate part is he has little to no trade value.

For all the bitching about Kevin Love's contract, you'd think people are under the impression that the money could've been spent elsewhere. Kevin Love's contract is the not the reason our draft picks suck. Kevin Love's contract isn't the reason we can't attract free agents. Kevin Love's contract isn't the reason LeBron left. Kevin Love's contract isn't the reason that JBB is stuck in 1992 NBA like his father. Kevin Love's contract isn't the reason the team is over the cap. Kevin Love's contract hasn't prevented the Cavs from doing a single thing other than trade him.

Love's contract does negatively impact the team's ability to sign free agents. And it is a big part of the reason the team has maxed out its cap space.

But we're stuck with it for two more seasons so there's no point continuing to bitch about it. It's a bad contract but just about every team has one, or had one in the past.

Prevented us from over paying mediocre free agents you mean? Cleveland has never been a free agent destination by the players we want, hell even Lebron couldn't recruit here. Loves money is dead money no matter what at this point.

It keeps you from having movable contracts. Love's deal is practically unmovable because of the amount of money and amount of years. It's not that the Cavs would have signed an all star player with the cash, but they might have been able to add someone who they could eventually package to level up a roster spot. So while Small market teams do need contracts, those contracts need to be somewhat movable.
Right now the Cavs best assets are Nance, Allen, Garland, Sexton, Okoro & Windler. All guys Koby would not want to trade. To move Love, you would likely have to INCLUDE one of those players or a protected pick.
Cavs should have had the foresight that Love was a negative asset for them. The trade market when he was a good/healthy player was underwhelming.. I mean, it's not like he wasn't always on the trade block. Teams value F's who can shoot, but they think they can get it for cheaper (case in point, Dean Wade)

Right and no one was "In Love" with Love's last contract but Dan and Love. It is what is at this point though and hind site is always 20-20, no value in berating the issue at this point.

If they're good enough to be part of a package deal for some star, they weren't signed as a free agent. I can't think of any mid range free agents we missed out on.

Even if we didn't resign Love, we'd have only been like a million under the salary cap. Putting us a cunt hair under the cap doesn't change anything.

It changes not having a negative asset on your books, making it hard to add another negative asset (which is a way to pick up positive assets.. bad contract comes over w/draft picks and a younger player etc.. ). This is also why Drummond is also bad for us.. he gums up our ability to make other deals because of the cash he's owed and roster spot he has.
I get that there are other factors though. Like taking care of players who have been good to your team.

You understand that operating under the cap by a million would've hamstringed us even worse than Love's contract? There was no mythical cap space we could've absorbed a bad contract into. Being under the cap is only useful if you're really far under the cap.

a 2-3 million dollar gap is pretty easy to fill. Ii agree that cap space is mostly useless for a small market team, though.

Ugh, I think his contract is certainly a big reason we're over the cap?

It's 30 million of dead money. It reduces flexibility and the ability to get involved in other moves.

And not signing him would've put us just under the cap, even further limiting the ability to be flexible.
