Rebounding often suffers when you have shot blockers. When they challenge shots from penetrating opponents, they are out of rebound position. Obviously, there are ways for the other players to hustle into rebound position, but when and how to do this is tricky... especially for in experienced players.
This is certainly true and it's a coachable issue. When the bigs go in to challenge in the paint the other players surrounding need to survey the area and get into position to box out as a group. This is teachable, they can do drills to get the idea in people's heads. Based on the first 2 games I have serious doubts that this is something BB or his staff have even thought about, let alone tried doing.

There's also a balance between crashing the boards and having defenders guarding against players leaking out for the long pass fast break. There need to be assignments based on where players are on the floor when the shot goes up. Guys in the paint box out and rebound as a group, guys out on the perimeter get back against the break.

Our team discipline in these areas is very poor. Coaching is the culprit on stuff like this.

I do think KLove could help our bigs with their individual boxing out technique. Again, IMO the coaching staff should be the ones to instigate and facilitate this. The players aren't going to come up with it on their own, nor should they. KLove would be hesitant to think he's stepping on toes, players who have things to learn about it probably aren't even aware of what they're lacking. This needs to come from the coaching staff as an area of focus.

The proper course of action was to trade Love instead of extending him. Anyone could have predicted Love not aging graceful (and people did) but Koby offered a sentimental contract to Love based on the past rather than what he could give in the future.

Normally after a title window closes, teams liquidate their roster to start over. Love had value at one point then Koby gave a massive extension which made him untradeable from the start.

Well-said. Fans have noticed Jarrett Allen's rebounding production dropped in the first two games. He got some criticism for it, but I believe it dropped because I saw him challenging the guards in the paint, like Morant. JA is normally a good rebounder. If he has to contest shots and give up rebounding position in the process, the other bigs need to get ready for the board in the event of a miss. Love was the only one boarding heavily last game. It makes sense for him to grab the boards because he's always been a weak paint defender, but they will need someone else boarding when he's not in. All of this just shows that team defense and coverage is a real problem right now, including rotations on the perimeter. And I agree at least some of that falls on the coaching.

Solid game by KLove tonight. If he can play like this and have an occasional hot 3 point shooting game he'll be an asset in the rotation.
Yep.

He had a good interview tonight too. I guess he could just be lying, but he seems engaged. Rubio doesn't seem so annoyed playing on this team today

If all he does this season is what he did tonight, we are money ahead..

I guess if your expectation to start the year was that his contribution would be equivalent to taking a flame thrower to $30M, then yeah… we’re better off than that! But production vs salary, not so much! :chuckle:

But I’m with ya - any net positive minutes/leadership/rebounding he can provide (and particularly if he can log 60+ games)… we’re at least getting some value out of him compared to last year.

Love's tree trunk of a base still serves him well in the low post - that's the last thing to go for an older guy like him, along with his shot. It's tough to move him.

However, these days he's almost unplayable as drop coverage defender when he's guarding centers. During those few seconds where he should be backpedaling like crazy to cover both the pick and roll ball handler and the rolling big on his hip, he looks like he's stuck in mud. Simply cannot move.

Love's a smart player so he still has some life in him if you can hide him in a zone. But he's much more a specialist than he used to be, on both sizes of the ball.

Not only did Love have a good game - I thought he was employed really well by JBB.

We have a lot of young players and new pieces and a few times (especially in the first half) the offensive rhythm was breaking down - putting Love in just calms everybody down -- slows down the tempo of the game, and lets everybody fit into their offensive roles much better.

I tend to agree.

JBB just needs to make it clear to Love that this team doesn't need his risky outlet passes (it's possible this has already been discussed). The vets – Rubio and Kevin in particular – need to be a stabilizing influence.

The Hawks game is a great example of what can happen if we keep turnovers to a minimum. That should be a season long theme for this team.

Rubio flat out stated in the post game that the long outlet passes only need to be thrown when it's obviously better than a 50-50 chance, being even more cautious in critical game situations. So yes, it is a point of focus.

This has been reported for agism. I can't wait for you to be old at 33 too!

I updated the thread title to reflect your assesment.

At first I was going to go with Kevin Love: NBA Super (Annuated) Star, but it don't flow.

I'm older than Love but also less geriatric. I guess I'm just built different?
