Trust me, I understand how fucking frustrating that would be. But this may come down to what's better for the Cavs. What's more important, fighting to keep our culture free of potential toxins while salvaging some cap space, or making sure Love stays nailed to our bench so he has to honor the rest of his contract in misery? What's stronger, your support for the Cavs or your disdain toward Love?

You may have mistaken me for someone who hasn't thought about that.

It's precedent. Right now the precedent is making JR Smith sit out when he tried this crap. It's a perfectly fine precedent for Love to think about of negotiating a possible buyout, because Detroit got rear-ended no lube by Griffin. Payback or get comfortable on your sofa.

Gotcha. For what it's worth, I'm going about this with as few preconceived notions or assumptions about anyone here. I'm pretty old school in terms of wanting to set a proper precedent, and holding players accountable and not letting them run the fucking asylum.

All I was trying to say is that it I think it would be better for the Cavaliers organization to just buy his ass out ASAP before FA gets into full swing. If you're arguing that a precedent needs to be set to let players know that this kinda bullshit isn't cool, then I respect that 100%. At that point, it becomes a matter of whether you feel strongly enough about your values to make a stand, because the rest of the league isn't going to sit there and pat us on the back for doing so, while we're the ones paying his full contract while he possibly contributes jack fucking squat.

** EDIT: sorry, minor edit, added the word "with" in the 2nd sentence ("going about this WITH as few preconceived notions...")

Buying Love out has almost no (or totally no?) impact on our cap. I'd rather he sit home if he's poising the kids than let him go play for someone else while we write the checks. And by we I mean not any of us.

Precedent was set with JR then again with Drummond to some degree. Seems like there's 2 options. Buy out if Love plays ball by giving significant $$$ back, or try to redeem his reputation enough to get something back for his expiring contract. Option 2 might be leaving town but maybe KLove gets shamed into doing some work to salvage his reputation so he can ride into the sunset with at least some modicum of dignity, if that is even a possibility for him physically at this point.

What makes you think it would have almost no impact on our cap? My argument would be that he still has two years left on his deal, so whatever he's willing to give back over two years, we could apply to our 2022-23 cap space.

I look at it like this: what kind of contract do you think Love would be able to get on the open market if he were a true UFA next month. Given everything we know about him, good and bad, is it far-fetched to think that a team, after whiffing on their primary FA wishlist, would be willing to bring him in on even a 2-year/$10 mil contract? Given the money that's being handed out in the NBA these days, I think that's a conservative assumption to make. I bet some team out there has a coaching staff arrogant enough to think they could restore Kevin and offer him a good amount more than that. But let's stick to the 2-yr/$10mil example. At the VERY LEAST, Love would be willing to give back $10 mil to the Cavs so he could be free to sign that 2/$10 mil deal with a contender, right? Now we can (correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not a CBA expert!) apply that $10 mil break to the final year of his contract, thereby gaining $10 mil in cap space for next summer. That doesn't even take into account how much he'd be willing to give back on top of what he knows he can earn elsewhere just to GTFO.

I don't think much of Kevin Love, but that Colangelo quote is something else.

What a fucking tool.

Honest question:

If Kevin Love gets bought out, what's the best he can be?

10 minutes a night on a maybe contender? Are we sure Love wouldn't just retire?

Seems like you are on the pessimistic extreme.

Sure, that's possible.

He also played 25 minutes a game last season, still had some strong games, and averaged point and rebound numbers of a decent third big on the roster.

So it's up to Love... he can be his best self for what he has left or continue the pout-fest.

I think the team around him could prove they can win, and he would rethink giving back money.

That's the optimist in me.

Just to make sure I understand what the optimist in you is saying, are you saying that if Love pulls his head out of his ass and registers strong minutes, and our young core proves that they can play winning ball, then he would re-think pursuing a buyout and help us win instead?

This is true (see the below quotes), but to me it doesn't change the fact that Love was handed an opportunity (word is that KD wanted him) to contribute to meaningful basketball, and showed up woefully out of shape. As a Cavs fans, that's what disappoints me. I agree that his value is shot so I didn't have much expectations, but at a bare minimum I wanted him to get some momentum going into what could be a fun season for the Cavs.

I don't know man. This is whole situation is bullshit to me and fuck Jerry Colangelo.

I'm not really one to defend Love. He's done a bunch of bullshit over the past few years and hasn't been healthy. I'm just curious how Jerry Colangelo could see Love play over the last 2-3 years (especially this past season) and have the expectation that Love was going to miraculously show up in shape and healthy ready to play. It doesn't make any fucking sense for someone that apparently knows so much about basketball.

To me this is a total indictment on Colangelo's decision making. Did he just not watch Love play at all before putting him on the 12 man roster? IMO Colangelo trashed Love to try to make himself look better for whatever reason.

Kevin Love left the Olympic team saying he isn't the type of player who can be the focal point of the offense anymore. That could mean he wants to sign with the Lakers for the minimum. The national media took it that way.

I'm suggesting this Cavs team isn't far from the Eastern Conference playoffs with Mobley, who can cover a lot of his problems defensively. Maybe he can talk himself into being a third big here?

Wouldn't it be fantastic if he could extend that type of humility to the fucking team that's on the hook for paying him over $30mil per season?? :dunno::chuckle:

But yeah, I see the following as the potential outcomes, as far as the Cavs are concerned:

1) We buy him out this summer and possibly save $10 mil+ against the cap next summer
2) He plays surprisingly well enough to actually have some trade value at the deadline in the winter
3) He plays surprisingly well enough to help us make the playoffs this year
4) His play continues to be uninspiring but he embraces his role as a veteran leader on a team full of young talent
5) His play continues to be uninspiring and we end up buying his ass out after the deadline and possibly save anywhere from $3 to $6 mil against the cap.
6) His play continues to be uninspiring and we have this same discussion again next summer over whether or not to buy his ass out.
6) His play continues to be uninspiring but we say fuck you, you signed the contract, now rot on the bench for the duration of your contract.

Obviously, this isn't a comprehensive list of possibilities, but I think that most reasonable scenarios can find its way into one of these categories. Unless I have some sort of assurance that he's going to play nice in the sandbox next year, I would strongly pursue #1. #2 and #3 would be fanfuckingtastic, but I wouldn't bank on it.

Time alone, time will tell. Think you're in Heaven but you're living in Hell.

I think he’d be off to La La land if he were to get bought out.

That being said, I think we should find some sort of role for the dude as he can still contribute on a winning team. Give him the Z treatment and play him 20 or so minutes a night.

Was watching YouTube videos & stumbled upon this. Man, Love was solid in his prime. I hope he has something left in the tank.

That could mean he wants to sign with the Lakers for the minimum.
Oh man. It was already awkward for me as an OKC follower when they traded for Thunder Hero Russ last night. If they add Love on top of it, even if he's so washed now that he can only offer 5 MPG, then I'm obligated to become a temporary Lakers fangirl. My Celtics fan mother would give me a glare if she were still around...but I'd have no choice. RUSS AND LOVE!

(Kinda want it to happen and kinda don't. Such pain.)
