I think you are overstating it. He actually had a positive OBPM and VORP last year. In 2019/2020 his VORP/minutes played was actually higher than the 2016/2017 season.
Love is a player who always fails the eye test. He is sometimes painful to watch when he's playing at an All NBA level -- he is often painful to watch when playing at an MLE level.
Is he worth $30M? Not even close -- but he is definitely worth the taxpayer MLE if healthy. I don't know if he'll get that -- if he wants to chase rings (LAL/BKN/MKE) he would have to accept the vet min.
I am really worried by the fact he isn't in shape. Why not? Can he get into shape? There was chatter about the calf at the olympics. Is that true? Is he still hurt. Ugh.
Just wondering whether that $12-15 mil figure is just an educated guess based on how much the Knicks are paying him, or if you actually saw something reported.Exactly. If he had any interest in getting back in shape and playing ball with a contender he would take a $12-15 mil buyout like Kemba just did. Unfortunately Kevin seems happy enough living his best life.. he wouldn't even try to get in shape when given the opportunity to represent the country in the Olympics. That pretty much tells ya all you need to know about current KLove.
This will go down as the worst contract in sports history...imo
Bobby Bonilla gets to keep collecting checks until 2035.That's a bit of hyperbole. The NFL instituted a rookie pay scale because of busts like Jamarcus Russell.
Bobby Bonilla is still getting paid 1 million a year. I know that seems like chump change, but that's been going on longer than some people on this board have been alive.
Stupid contracts are handed out every year, particularly when teams have their first and second options fall through. Maybe it's wishful thinking that he could get the MLE, but the amount we could get Love to give back in order to be bought out will almost certainly never be higher than it is right now. The following is from Lloyd's piece at The Athletic:I think you are overstating it. He actually had a positive OBPM and VORP last year. In 2019/2020 his VORP/minutes played was actually higher than the 2016/2017 season.

If true, I'm stunned that these conversations haven't begun yet. If the Cavs aren't even going to consider it unless Love were giving back at least $12 mil then they're fucking fools. We should take whatever the hell we can get out of him and move the fuck on. We aren't contending this year or two, so the only value he would have to this team, even if he were to somehow remain healthy, would be as a veteran leader or mentor, and that ship has long-since sailed.I remain steadfast in the belief a buyout is the best path for both sides, but those conversations haven’t occurred to this point. Love would have to give back significant money, somewhere in the $12-$15 million range, for the Cavs to consider letting him walk. Love has given no indication to this point he’s willing to do that. So the staring match continues.
I feel like the worst NBA contract is still either that post-achillies Arenas extension or the 10 year deal CWebb got with a player option n year 2...This will go down as the worst contract in sports history...imo
Cavaliers Haven’t Yet Discussed Kevin Love Buyout | SLAM
While his future in Cleveland has been up in the air for quite some time, Kevin Love still hasn't had buyout discussions with the Cavaliers.www.slamonline.com
Agreed. I know a lot of posters don't agree with me on this, but the best course of action will be to move him into backup big man for 20 minute stints and accept it. The Olympic team was a chance to raise his status for a trade, and it went as poorly as one could imagine.
Still feeling good about this stance. Both the Cavs and Kevin lose if they try all these buyout scenarios. Accepting the aging process isn't easy, my knees and waistline will tell you that, but it's the sanest course of action until the last year of his contract. The optimist in me sees a path where he can still play an important role as the young core gets better, like Paul Millsap provided Jokic.
I think if Love accepts a back up role and is willing to do it he could add some great value to us. Does that mean Nance and Mobley share some backup minutes at C?
